Dancing with the Stars – Making a Dancing Donkey Post 3 of 3 The application team comprised of : James Mackinnon, Julie Socash, Tyson Fontaine and Myself. The wig was designed and cut by Kimi Messina, who, for the sake of time jumped in and double teamed with us at the end of the makeup to get the wig on and styled. If you saw the episode, then you know that it all went as planned…..and worked great. For context tho, all of these images will give you a behind the scenes and closer look from beginning to end of the manifestation of the “Donkey”. I owe tremendous gratitude to everyone that participated in this makeup….especially during the clean up frenzy. Dancing with the Stars – Making a Dancing Donkey Post 2 of 3 Two sentences ago, I used the word “usually”….so, as I am prepping the donkey prosthetics, and about a week out from the live show, we got the news that a little change of plans was in the works. Not only was Alan going to be doing his Encanto/Donkey dance with his partner Ilona, he was needed in the first dance of the show, as himself….. clean. And, he was also going to be needed in the very last dance as himself… Clean. Doing the math, the producers let us know that the we would have about 70 minutes between his first dance and when he was schedule to Donkey Dance. That allowed us around 10 minutes to clean the prosthetics off of him so that he could do the last dance. “Can we do it?”, was the question. “We have to”, was the answer. We started making a plan by breaking all of the “moments or tasks”, for this to happen as production needed, into beats within a timeline. Minute by minute, a pile of milestones that we had to make. We even had someone calling out the countdown clock. I rethought and redesigned our application process so that the foam pieces would be preapplied to some thin shells that were cut back so that he could get all of the face expressions that he needed. These prosthetics could go on as quickly as possible, and allow the removal to be much easier and faster to accommodate his quick change……and of course….it had to stay on during the dance. Dancing with the Stars – Making a Dancing Donkey Post 1 of 3 For any of you that have been a part of either makeup or hair teams for the show “Dancing with the Stars”, you know that since this is a “completely live show”, everything from the prep, to the show day, to the happenings backstage and in the trailers…..it is a whirlwind. And this year was no different. A couple of weeks out from Disney week, Zena Green, the Dept Head of Makeup and Julie Socash contacted me about some upcoming direction for a couple of the dancers for that show. The main focus for me would be the team of Alan Bersten and Ilona Maher. They would be dancing to “Surface Pressure from Encanto. Angela Moos would be handling Ilona. Turning Alan into a Donkey was for Me. For this makeup task, I estimated that with a second person for application and possibly a third to help with hands, we should be able to do it in approx. 90 minutes, and then he could move over to Kimi Messina’s hair dept. For this live show, obviously the dancers will be rehearsing, rehearsing, dancing, dancing….and sweating. During the application we would ‘usually’ take the time to prep the skin and adhere the prosthetics so that the opportunity for the makeup to fail is reduced as much as foreseeable. Heat and sweat are always our nemesis. The crew ended up being a mix of old faces and new. This was the first time I had worked for Koji, and it was an enjoyable experience. Thank you for the opportunity. ** this is one of six posts , that I will be posting for Koji Ohmura at KOFX ** Earlier this year, I was hired to age 6 actors for the “AARP” commercial “Future Me”. Like all commercials, we had very little prep time. We ending up using more than 66 different prosthetics & facial hair pieces to age these fun & patient actors. We shot before the union strike, and I was able to put together a great team, who really brought their talent and experience with them.
