We came back from break today with an absolute treat—an author and illustrator visit! Brian Lies kicked off our Literature Month celebration, joining us all the way from Massachusetts (and we’re hoping he makes it home safely through all the snow tomorrow!). He met with every grade level, sharing fascinating insights into his process of writing and illustrating books. For each group, he showed us pictures of his home, his studio, and his pets, including his cats, one of whom inspired his most recently published book, “Cat Nap,” available in the UCDS Library along with many of his other books.
Brian gave us a peek into where his ideas come from, how he sketches and illustrates, the mountains of drafts each book goes through, and even shared one of his hand-illustrated stories from 2nd grade. Each group got to vote for one of his books to be read aloud, and he wrapped up the day by illustrating a picture using suggestions from the kids.
His big takeaway for everyone? “Practice makes better!” He reminded us that by sticking with what we love, anyone can grow their skills, no matter their starting talent. Thank you for joining us, Brian, and safe travels home!

Kicking off the new year (a bit late! 😉) with a phenomenal picturebook! 'Cat Nap', written and illustrated by @brianlies , is truly stunning.
A cat is woken from a nap by the sound of a mouse. The mouse seems to disappear into a piece of artwork. "Does Kitten follow? Of course he does." And so begins the Kitten's journey through all sorts of incredible pieces of art.
This book begs the reader to go back and read it over and over to pick up on all the little details. So much to enjoy!
And be sure to read the author's note in the back about his process for creating the book, as well as the descriptions of the artwork featured in the book.

We talked a lot about the art technique and read the amazing author/illustrator note at the end and then tried to guess where the plaster, wood, goatskin parchment and gold leaf illustrations were! @brianlies students wondered which was the most challenging for you and what gold leaf is?
