Two festivals said yes. One distribution deal followed. And one day I walked into Blockbuster and saw Redemption on the shelf. Ten, twenty copies deep.
I had attended the AFI Youth in Video program when I was twelve years old. My former stepmother, actress Berlinda Tolbert, told me she thought I would be a good director.
Standing in that store I didn’t need an award or a pat on the back.
I had taken pain and turned it into something positive.
I had found my Redemption.

Post production on Redemption started with a recommendation.
Stacey Bellew Thornton played Veronica in the movie. After we wrapped she introduced us to her husband at the time, Bonner Bellew.
Bonner cut a trailer first.
That trailer raised $24,000 and made the full edit possible.
What followed was two years of nights and weekends. Over 2,500 cuts. A first cut that ran two hours and eighteen minutes. A format problem that required a second editor. A voiceover debate I refused to lose.
And somewhere in all of it, the movie stopped being Bad Vibes, Brown Eyes and became Redemption.
Not because of a marketing meeting. Not because of a note from a studio.
Because it was true.
