On September 13th last year, Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford moved up two weight classes to challenge for Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s UNDISPUTED super-middleweight titles - in a matchup that was widely seen as a step too far for the former undisputed welterweight champion despite his superior skill due to Alvarez’s proven experience and power at 168lbs!
Terence Crawford outboxed Canelo Alvarez on the back foot from the fourth round onwards after a competitive start, he countered Canelo at will and had an answer for EVERY SINGLE power punch the larger man threw at him, he made Canelo miss on the outside and the inside AND THEN he MARCHED to the inside and went PUNCH FOR PUNCH with CANELO ALVAREZ in his FIRST FIGHT at SUPER-MIDDLEWEIGHT! HE BEAT CANELO AT HIS OWN GAME!
The magnitude of what happened needs to be highlighted again: Terence Crawford is the first three-weight undisputed champion since HENRY ARMSTRONG IN 1938.
I simply won’t hear any slick talk about Canelo being ‘washed’ in this fight. The Canelo we saw tonight was far superior to the versions we’ve seen against Scull, Berlanga, Munguia and Ryder. Alvarez’s punch output was a lot higher, his footwork was faster than it’s been since the first Golovkin fight, his defence looked slick at times and his punch selection was improved - as he targeted the body pretty well early on. BUT IT STILL WASN’T ENOUGH.
Crawford was initially caught by quite a few body shots - particularly the left hook to the body - in the opening rounds and it seemed like this would be the basis from which Canelo would slowly break the lighter man down as the fight went on. Instead, Bud used this success AGAINST Canelo as he noticed the champion committing to the shot and made sure to catch and counter each body shot with multiple swift combinations to swing the ascendency back in his favour!
