How does a sexually assaulted woman sit idly by, never reporting, until only the most "convenient" time to come forward?
How dare she keep silent?
How dare she silence her own voice before everyone else receives an opportunity to silence it for her? *** I have been raped.
Frozen.
Silent.
Unable to move.
Unable to speak.
Unable to *breathe*. Unable to make any sense of what happened to me for YEARS.
I didn't report because who would believe me? And if they did, would they even care? And if they did, could they even do anything about it?
I've shared my stories with a few friends and relatives, but never publicly ousted my rapists. Maybe I should. Probably I won't.
But if they were up for public office, for a LIFETIME seat on the SUPREME COURT?
You bet your sweet ass I would. To hell with the consequences.
The women coming forward to tell their stories are BRAVE.
The popular rhetoric would have us believe only Kavanaugh stands to lose. But these women stand to lose at least as much, and arguably more.
Death threats against women who dare speak out against men is appallingly commonplace, not just in politics. Ths high stakes just makes it that much more proliferous and that much more serious.
These women are standing up to tell you their message is so important they're literally willing to die for it.
ARE YOU LISTENING?
Because our teenagers are. They are paying attention to *everything* we say right now.
When the dust settles and they ask you what sexual assault is, will you tell them it's "No big deal"? This movement isn't a cute, feminist battle you can dismiss with a hand wave and a chuckle.
This is war.
What started as a rumble is now a mighty roar.
We are mighty because we stand not just for ourselves, but for our sisters, friends, mothers, aunts, grandmothers and great grandmothers and theirs before theirs. We stand for each other and we stand for those who aren't yet brave enough to stand with us. And we stand for our daughters, that they may have an opportunity to not know this pain.
We will not sit down.
We will not shut up.
We will not be silent anymore.
