The existing ruin is the remains of a 110 years old Idrovora: a construction hosting a pump connected to a water channel network. Its role was to dry the lands and therefore transform the natural landscape into a rationalised agricultural system.
The intervention proposes to reveal the footprint of the ruined structure by reusing the collapsed bricks as a floor. The inside becomes a garden for the new living space. All the existing openings are maintained. Where the ruin has collapsed a main opening is created under the existing beam. It connects the interior space, the terrace garden and the water channel.

The proposal places the existing construction at its core. Around it, the new timber structure creates a peripheral gallery connected to the exterior with a continuous floor made of reused concrete slabs. The limited footprint of the volume defines four distinct outdoor public spaces: the entrance square to the north, the shared garden to the east, the rain garden to the south, and the promenade to the west. The façades on each of these four sides are made of different reused materials.
"L’ancienne maison des jardins familiaux (AMJF) est le cœur du projet. En été, les vitrages sont relevés derrière l’avant-toit, et la construction historique redevient la façade de la maison de quartier."

Landscape is not a compositional intention but the visible face of a complex metabolism, involving a succession of man-made transformations and natural evolutions. It is a constantly evolving process, seeking its unavoidable balance. The Caprulana lagoon made of water, salt and brackish ecosystem was transformed into drained agricultural fields. This complex pattern is organized by the ramification of water lines creating a landscape, transformed by the art of man.
