Mississippi isn’t aesthetic. Being southern isn’t a costume we wear and forget about after we take it off. The South is our way of life. It’s a real, unglamourous, down & dirty kinda place but it’s also so fun, wild, peaceful, and slow. In my Ride Along series, I want people to see the real Mississippi. Three works completed. More coming. Inquire at link. ā€œPicked Up in the Pick Upā€ Acrylic and thread on canvas. 2026. #mississippiartist #blackmississippiartists #southernart #southernblackartists

This piece that has hung on our wall for a few weeks. It really brought a high-end but rustic country vibe to our primary living space even when it’s littered with toys, bottles, and Bam’s potty. I love hanging my paintings in our space instead of storing them. Paintings are meant to be lived with and looked at. Our homes and the things we collect are an ode to our lives. Homes are meant to have things in them that inspire us and make us feel cozy and safe. I’m grateful a collector in Texas found that this painting does that for them. Comment ā€œtruckā€ to read more about the story behind this piece on my substack or hit my link in bio. ā€œPicked Up in the Pick Upā€ Acrylic & thread on canvas. 30x 40 in. 2025. SOLD. šŸ”“

The best way to describe my new painting series is I paint country sh*t. šŸ˜‚ I’m beyond grateful for getting to share my experiences as an artist & Mississippian with Ole Miss. Monday, May 4th, come watch me on a big screen for Mississippi Made - a documentary series spotlighting creatives across the Sipp. At The Powerhouse in Oxford, MS at 6:30šŸ’™ā¤ļø By the time most people find an artist they love, the work they want is already gone. I hope you found me just in time because I’m not stopping til I’m where I want to be. #mississippimade #mississippiartist #southernblackart #southernart

Absolutely captivated by this still from the Mississippi Creates documentary about my work. A few weeks ago @mariel_sprock & @cstickels came to Meridian & Kemper with a big ole camera to follow me around and document my process, teaching, and my day to day life as a Mississippi artist. Y’all, I had them all in the woods, showing them my childhood Dollar General, my granddaddy’s land, how we ride 4wheelers, and my dad HAD to show his garden.šŸ˜‚ If you are in the Oxford, MS area Monday, May 4th, I would love to see you at the screening. My finished DG painting will also be on view. Stay tuned for sneak peaks of the footage here. My work is making a very visible shift since I am getting inspired by my state. I hope you enjoy these new paintings and the writing that goes along with it on my substack. I want viewers to feel like they have an insiders scoop on what it means to be a Mississippian. Whenever I’m traveling and tell people I’m from Mississippi, I can see the horror stories and stereotypes flash across their face. Southern simplicity is making a comeback but The South is so much more than the Cowboy hat and boots you ordered from Amazon or the latest line dance you learned. I want to show you the realness and the beauty of my neck of the woods. Ride Along with me. ALSO!! I’m so excited to share I was chosen for the Mississippi Creates documentary series. Stay tuned (literally) because I’m going to be on a big screen!!🄰 God, is really Godding, this life is so crazy & I am beyond thankful Jesus.šŸ«¶šŸ½šŸ¤žšŸ¾

Read more about the story behind this Dollar General piece in my very first Substack article! Writing it felt like revisiting meaningful childhood moments that didn’t seem important at the time, but stuck with me. When my mom read it to my dad and they both laughed with tears, it told me that the small things I do for my son matter to him. This work is a kind of love letter to my family, to the places that raised me, and to the everyday places that don’t often get romanticized. Right now, I’m building the surface with Dollar General receipts collected over time. They hold traces of what people need, what they reach for that are personal, practical, sometimes private things. But these receipts are left behind and I think there’s something intimate in that. This piece is part of my ā€œRide Alongā€ body of work, where I document moments and experiences across Mississippi places and stories that are often overlooked or misunderstood. If you’re here, you’re already part of the ride. Stay with me as this one comes together. Link in bio to my Substack. Or comment DG below & I’ll send it to you.

Branding sessions are about more than pretty photos…they’re about telling your story! Watching artist, @brejenn , move between creativity and motherhood so effortlessly was such a beautiful reminder that our businesses are deeply personal. Congratulations to this talented Mississippi artist for completing a residency at the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art!

THANK YOU! The exhibit to conclude my residency at the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art @laurenrogersmoa was such an awesome ending to an incredible experience. I have learned so much and met so many welcoming and talented people. I want to thank my husband and family for supporting me throughout these past few weeks, whether it be keeping my baby boy while he was sick or showing up to all my programming to take pictures and videos. God, I’m truly blessed and HIGHLY favored to have such an awesome support system that enables me to pursue my dreams AND be a good Mom. I would also like to thank the LRMA for creating an educationally rich program for both myself and the little artists I was lucky to teach. Thank you HILLARY @hksteinwinder ! You are THAT lady! From detailed organization to bringing me food, to being so receptive to my ideas and needs, I appreciate you. George, Angie, Todd, Joe, Kelly, Tommy and so many more staff, guild members, and community members like the Trests (@adamtrest ) or my group of 20 black grannies that showed up to my talk, thank you for lending your wisdom and your stories. We are made from what we carry in this mixed media life and I carry a little piece of Laurel with me. Thank you for being a layer in my life’s work. ā¤ļø Now…What’s next? This Sunday at 1:30pm I’d love for you to stop by the @laurenrogersmoa of the opening reception of my exhibit showcasing the work I created during my residency! I’ll have a few pieces on display alongside student work from the workshops I taught the past two weeks. This was such an incredible learning experience and I’m ready to delve more into my ā€œRide Alongā€ series depicting Mississippi life. Big shoutout to my @saicpics classmate @joe_prine_iii for installing my work & teaching me a thing or two about preparatory duties!!! It’s so crazy that we ended up back in Mississippi and reconnected all these years later. See you at the show!šŸ«¶šŸ½

My husband swears he can narrate better than me with his crazy tail self🄰 How do y’all think he did?šŸ˜‚ I might make him do all my voiceovers. I hope this helps you understand what a residency is and why they’re a great opportunity for artists, writers, and other creative professionals. ā¤ļø
