🌍 What does high-performing, sustainable development look like in practice? Our BREEAM Projects of the Month series shows how sustainability is being delivered from design and construction to operation and refurbishment. Each project highlights a different approach to improving environmental performance, resilience and long-term asset value, demonstrating what’s possible when sustainability is embedded at every stage. See how these developments are setting the benchmark. 🌳 We're delighted to see The Royal Parks Queen Elizabeth II Garden open to the public. Commissioned by David Morley Architects LLP, our experts advised the team how to turn the former nursery into a garden - sustainably.🌳 "BRE's pre-demolition audit really influenced how we will incorporate sustainability into the project, both in terms of the materials we use and the proposed design of the garden." says Susanna Blomqvist-Kryuchenkova at The Royal Parks. The concrete greenhouse bases were processed into aggregate on site to landscape the borders and a pergola representing 56 countries of the Commonwealth was made from the old greenhouse steel. Created by The Royal Parks charity in collaboration with HTA Design, the two-acre garden is a fully accessible, climate-resilient public space. It features a wildlife-supporting circular pond and a central flower garden planted with species significant to Queen Elizabeth II by a team of volunteers. Swipe to see behind the scenes on this pioneering project. 👇 #BRE #Horticulture #RoyalParks #QEIIGarden #RegentsPark

BRE is playing a leading role in new global coalition setting sustainability standards for AI data centres. Together with @worldgbc @climatebondsinitiative , German Sustainable Building Council, GRESB, @gbcaus , @igbconline and @usgbc , we're working to cut through greenwashing and direct capital toward facilities that reduce emissions while protecting water resources, energy systems and local communities. BRE's James Fisher says: “BRE is pleased to be part of the Greening AI Data Centres Coalition, bringing together organisations with shared expertise across the built environment. As AI infrastructure continues to expand, collaborative approaches grounded in recognised standards such as BREEAM are essential to support more sustainable outcomes for buildings, infrastructure and the communities they serve.” #Sustainability #AI #DataCentres #ClimateAction #GreenBuilding #ESG #NetZero #BuildingTheTransition #BeBoldOnBuildings #BREEAM #EarthDay

🌳"Why is nature harder to tackle?" - asks BRE's Jennifer Dudley. Complexity is nature's beauty but also its challenge. Unlike carbon, which can be measured in tonnes, biodiversity is dynamic, site-specific, and difficult to quantify. This complexity has historically made it harder to integrate nature into ESG frameworks and investment decisions. But that’s changing. We're now beginning to break down silos as we understand how nature connects with other sustainability goals: 💎 Carbon: Soil and plant systems are key to carbon sequestration 🌊 Resilience: Green infrastructure helps mitigate flooding and urban heat 🍃 Social impact: Access to nature improves health and wellbeing So, what can we do to better integrate nature into the built environment? BRE's BREEAM Official framework supports this through: 🔹 Enhanced alignment with global biodiversity goals 🔹 Alignment with metrics like Biodiversity Net Gain and the Urban Greening Factor 🔹 A two-tier assessment approach: Foundation (for low ecological risk sites) and Comprehensive (requiring a qualified ecologist) How are you supporting nature and biodiversity on your projects? What great examples have you seen? Drop your thoughts in the comments. ⬇️ #BREEAM #Nature #Biodiversity #ESG

Did you know that in the UK, only 24% of schools provide daily opportunities for students to experience nature, dropping to 18% in more deprived areas (Dillon, 2025)? @wearekier asked BRE to help them identify design opportunities for students to engage with nature in kSchool, their highly successful standardised approach to school construction. BRE has been researching how to use nature in buildings - or biophilic design for many years, including a pioneering project with @oliverheathdesign . What are your thoughts on biophilic design? Let us know in the comments.

Help us find the world’s most sustainable cities and communities. ✨ This year’s BREEAM Awards spotlight places around the world that are building for the future. Take Dubai, a member of the Resilient Cities Network, committed to advancing urban resilience across climate, infrastructure, and community wellbeing. Dubai is also rapidly emerging as a leader in certified sustainable development, with major projects successfully achieving BREEAM ratings — including Majid Al Futtaim's Tilal Al Ghaf, which recently secured a BREEAM Excellent certification for its holistic approach to ESG goals, health, and net‑zero ambitions. Or Rotterdam, also a member of the Resilient Cities Network and one of Europe’s leading voices in climate adaptation. According to the Arcadis Sustainable Cities Index 2024, Rotterdam ranks 2nd globally, reflecting world‑class performance across environmental, social, and economic sustainability pillars. 👉 Which cities are doing it best? 👉 Which cities do you believe deserve recognition for their leadership?
