Nothing prepared Pascale for the loss of her mum, her best friend, piece by piece. Fifteen years later, the goodbye is still not over. Too many families know the unbearable heartbreak of dementia. Every day, 250 more Australians begin that same journey. And without a breakthrough, that number will only grow. This EOFY, we’re asking you to help change that. There is no cure without research, and there is no research without you. Your tax-deductible donation before June 30 will go towards critical brain research that changes lives and brings hope to families like Pascale’s. Please, donate now at the link in our bio 💚 #dementia #frontotemporaldementia #FTD #story #mum

🎉 Today is the Brain Foundation’s 55th anniversary! 🎉 Since 1970, we’ve been proudly funding Australian research into brain diseases, disorders, and injuries. Over the past five decades, with your support, we’ve: ➡️ Awarded over 520 research grants to Australian researchers ➡️ Distributed over $11.2 million in grant funding ➡️ Delivered educational webinars on brain health and conditions to more than 22,700 attendees (in the last five years alone!) None of this would be possible without you – our wonderful supporter community. Thank you to everyone who has hosted a fundraiser, attended an event, donated to research, or raised awareness for brain diseases, disorders, and injuries. The world has changed a lot since 1970, with some incredible scientific advances along the way. But our work is not done. Help us get a head start on funding the next 55 years of research. Your support could lead to a breakthrough that changes outcomes for patients and their loved ones 💚 🔗 Donate today through the link in our bio #anniversary #55years #brain #brainhealth #research #brainfoundation

May is MS Awareness Month. Meet Dr Izanne Roos, one of our 2025 grant recipients. Dr Roos and her team are answering a key question: do therapies for progressive MS work as effectively for patients without active signs of inflammation? With their Brain Foundation grant, Dr Roos and her team are using real-world patient data to find out. Their findings will help doctors make more precise treatment decisions, help patients avoid unnecessary risk and costs, and improve care for people living with progressive MS. Read more about Dr Roos' research on our website. #MSAwarenessMonth #MS

Can dementia be reversed? The short answer is not yet. While we don't have a cure or way to reverse primary forms of dementia like Alzheimer's disease, research is progressing all the time. What we do know is that early diagnosis, timely treatment, and lifestyle changes can make a real difference to symptom management and quality of life. Things like regular exercise, a healthy diet, and staying socially connected are important modifiable factors (things you can control) for healthy ageing. 📢 Curious about lifestyle, brain health and ageing? Watch the full webinar with A/Prof Roehr from CHeBA for free on our website or YouTube channel. #BrainAwarenessWeek #BrainHealth #Ageing #dementia

Send this to someone who's a flag expert ➡️ Happy #BrainTeaserTuesday. Pop your guesses in the comments! There used to be one other national flag without red, white or blue until they updated their flag in 2017 to include red bands. Bonus points if you can tell us what country that is... #brainteaser #geographyquiz #trivia

How do you manage exercise and migraine? Exercise is a well-known trigger for migraine, but at the same time, regular gentle exercise may also help reduce overall migraine frequency. Exercise looks different for everyone with migraine, depending on your personal threshold and triggers. But certain precautions can help make it more approachable: ✅ Stay hydrated, using electrolytes if needed ✅ Do warm-ups and cooldowns ✅ Avoid high-intensity or high-altitude activities ✅ Try gentle activities like yoga, swimming or walking, start slow and build up ✅ Avoid exercising in extreme temperatures, poor air quality, or high humidity ✅ Ensure you have eaten enough to avoid low blood sugar You can watch the full Q&A with Dr Michael Eller for free on the Brain Foundation website or YouTube channel. #exercsie #migraine #migrainetriggers

“If we can pick up MS before it becomes symptomatic and if we can treat it effectively, we can prevent a significant number from developing symptomatic MS.” Dr Yi Chao Foong and his team will be using their 2025 Brain Foundation Research Grant to investigate the potential of low-field MRI to detect MS lesions. If successful, it would provide a lower-cost, portable option that could be widely scaled to enable earlier detection and treatment. Co-Investigators : A/Prof Anneke Van der Walt, A/Prof Kh Tohidul Islam, A/Prof Zhaolin Chen, A/Prof Helen Kavnoudias

We're proud to introduce the Darren 'Muddy' Laycock Grant for AVM Research, honouring a beloved father, friend and community hero who passed without warning at 55 from a ruptured arteriovenous malformation (an abnormal tangle of blood vessels in the brain). Darren was a skilled mechanic and diesel fitter who spent his career working on pipelines and heavy machinery across remote Australia. He had a passion for motorcycles and water skiing - and a long-held dream of riding from Melbourne all the way up to Darwin. In 2025, his family and friends made that dream come true, bringing the community together and completing the 4,000km motorbike ride (named ‘the Mudrun’) in his memory. We are proud to support ongoing AVM awareness and fund critical research in Darren's name. Applications are now open - learn more and apply on our website. If you know a researcher working in this space, please share this opportunity. #AVM #avmawareness #research
