The first works on trains in NYC, the groundbreaking achievements of Phase 2 and Lee, the stylistic diffusion of the CTK group across the continent, the emergence of conceptual bombing as a distinct aesthetic, the DIY culture of graffiti zines, and the first European visits to New York. In the background—Poland in the 1990s, whose presence in the global narrative of graffiti history has been negligible until now. 🔺HALLENKUNST – ART IN TRANSIT AND BEYOND jetzt erhältlich bei ilovegraffiti.de [Link in Bio] Ein Projekt, an dem wir aktiv mitgearbeitet haben, ist jetzt in einem fast 500-seitigen Buch ausführlich dokumentiert und erhältlich: ART IN TRANSIT AND BEYOND. Die @hallenkunst -Doppelausstellung fand vom 28.08.2025 bis 12.10.2025 in der Europäischen Kulturhauptstadt Chemnitz statt und erzählt im Kern eine Geschichte, die wir seit vielen Jahren hier auf ILOVEGRAFFITI.DE begleiten. Eine teils detaillierte Forschung nach historischen Ereignissen und miteinander verknüpften Projekten, Medien und Prozessen von Graffiti als Subkultur. Warum, wie und wann ist New-York-inspiriertes Graffiti speziell auf Zügen entstanden und in welchen Schritten ist es nach Europa gekommen, und wie wurde Graffiti Writing Europa später interpretiert und weiterentwickelt. Auch hier interessiert uns schon immer der Fokus auf Zügen, denn da hat Graffiti bekanntlich sehr spannende stilistische Entwicklungen zu verzeichnen, denkt man an Futura2000’s Break Train im Jahr 1980, den Club of Rome München um 1988, Art Inconsequence 2006 oder die Arbeiten von RAGE und MOSESTAPS in den 2010er Jahren. Damit einher gehen zahlreiche weitere Protagonisten, viele Filme, Bücher und Galeristen, die diesen Weg nicht nur begleitet, sondern stark mitgeprägt haben. In diesem Bereich der Graffiti-Forschung sind wir schon länger aktiv, unter anderem im Rahmen der arte.tv-Dokuserie RISE OF GRAFFITI – From New York To Europe oder eben diesem Ausstellungsprojekt. Mit dem Unterschied, dass diese Erzählung ergänzt wird durch kuratierte künstlerische Auseinandersetzungen und Positionen, die zeigen sollen, was aus den Protagonisten dieser über 40-jährigen Geschichte einer Subkultur in Europa geworden ist. Der Katalog fasst diese Erzählung nun in einem fast 500-seitigen Buch zusammen, das nicht nur ein Katalog, sondern auch ein interessanter Beitrag zur kulturhistorischen Dokumentation geworden ist. 🔺GRAFFITI GOES EAST • HALLENKUNST • 28.08.2025 - 21.09.2025 • Markthalle Chemnitz Together with graffiti writers from East Berlin and the team behind Poland's first graffiti magazine, BRAIN DAMAGE, our timeline exhibition in the Mid-Nineties section tells the story of how graffiti from Berlin and the new German Eastern states was able to spread towards Eastern Europe at a breakneck speed. It was 1996 and 1997 when Berlin’s CAF CREW began writing "Graffiti Goes East" next to their pieces on Polish commuter- and s-trains: a claim that gained visibility via traveling photos all over Europe and through photos published in German and French Graffiti Magazines, revolutionizing an era and ruffling that part of the world. Thirty-four years later, graffiti has reached the farthest places in the East, enriched on the way with boundless cultural influences. Eastern European graffiti writers' attitude is unique and powerful and might be the reason why some of this generation are international top players in the today's graffiti movement. 🔺BD PROJECTS • HALLENKUNST • 28.08.2025 - 21.09.2025 • Markthalle Chemnitz For many years, we and thousands of others graffiti enthusiasts have been following the Brain Damage Project (@braindamage_projects ) from Warsaw, collaborations between us and its creators, who have since become a true institution in Europe, began in the early 2000s.  Brain Damage Projects was founded in 1997 as Brain Damage Magazine, which for nearly a decade was distributed on almost all continents, in more than a dozen countries around the world. Since then, we have continuously focused on presenting graffiti writing and its various forms of evolution by publishing books, organizing exhibitions under @bd_gallery_ , premieres and meetings, and curating activities in urban spaces. BD is also developing its archive and library. Brain Damage's activities take place in Poland and abroad, carrying out international projects in Berlin, Budapest, Prague, Stockholm, Paris, Kyiv, Minsk, Tbilisi, Lisbon, New York, and Miami. 🔺FINER • HALLENKUNST • 28.08.2025 - 21.09.2025 • Markthalle Chemnitz We were introduced to FINER (@finerism ) from Warsaw through Cezary Hunkiewicz (curator of @bd_gallery_ / @braindamage_projects ) during a research visit to Chemnitz a few months ago. FINER, alongside other Polish artists participating in HALLENKUNST, was exploring the European Capital of Culture #Chemnitz2025, seeking inspiration and discuss ideas. FINER is an influential figure in the Eastern European graffiti scene, having started his journey in the late 1990s. For over two decades, he's been recognized as a highly innovative individual who stands out with his unique style that blends illustration with animated imagery, which he calls "giffiti." This distinctive approach makes his work unique in the global community, known for its simplicity, clear visuals, and a touch of irony. WOODEN CANVAS by Paweł Swanski 25 Years of Skateboarding Art - Design | Painting | Installation 26.04-09.05 OPENING - SATURDAY, APRIL 26th, 19:00. Brain Damage Projects, Puławska 31, Warszawa This year marks 25 years since I designed my first skateboard graphic. For someone who grew up on comics, pop culture, skateboarding, Spike Jonze music videos and Girl & Chocolate films, it was a dream come true. In the meantime, I have designed over 140 board graphics for companies all over the world, I became a painter and designer and I still skate. Some time ago I decided to do a summary of this work. It turned out that I had no idea how much influence skateboarding had on me as a person and an artist. I decided to expand this exhibition to show how interesting and incredible this phenomenon is. For me, skateboarding is art, an amazing form of expression and above all, a selfless, pure pleasure. That is why at the exhibition I will show not only boards from my studio archive but also paintings and installations.
