As both a camera person and audience member, I have long had mixed feelings about using the straight-into-the-lens look for documentary interviews. For me it always felt a little like a driver's ed video or a prescription drug testimonial. However, when director Aaron Lubarsky decided on Sat eve he for sure wanted this look for his Sunday morning shoot with heavyweight champion @zhileibigbangzhang "Big Bang", I had to oblige.
I have used the @EyeDirect periscope device a number of times before, with the same mixed feelings about the aesthetic in general. But, for a number of reasons, Sat afternoon is not a good time to subrent camera gear in NYC. I remembered I had a cheap DSLR teleprompter in the basement from a tutorial series years ago. We paired this with a tablet and used FaceTime, which worked out really well.
I actually kind of like the results for this subject matter- it feels really ernest. I was intentionally very stingy with my eyelight in this setup so it's not always there sparkling, you have to earn it throughout the conversation, which in my mind significantly eased the cheese factor.
To get this cheap prompter to mount to the camera rods, and not the other way around, I had to do a little tweaking, including tapping some new holes in an old Arri-offset dovetail plate I had lying around. But if you're not drilling a few holes in your camera equipment, are you really even #Reebing it?
So I just found a birthday card I’d forgotten about from 10 years ago.. TO THE DAY
Once upon a time in March, Believe LTD rented out a summer camp in California and we shot a hot, campy season of “Stop the Bleeding!”
The year was 2016, the weather was fine, and the Wet Hot American Summer series had just dropped on streaming.
From a camcorder on the sidewalks of Manhattan until Covid when the show went animated, every March I looked forward to working with the team. My late mother (who’s birthday is March 19th) loved this show, she would watch every season, despite them “sure talking about Hemolphilia a lot.” XD I’ve linked this season in my bio.
From her rolling hills, to her babbling.. lake. Adonwana ever lose the friendships that I make.
On a much more minor note, March 18th is also Kate Dalton’s birthday. So happy birthday to Jacqui, too.
If you guys ever feel like doing something like this again, give me a call.
5 years. 5 years ago today 😭 It feels like 5 years...AND just yesterday at the same time. Grief is unpredictable, you never know how it's going to hit you. You've been in my dreams almost every night this past month. I miss you, your hugs, your laugh, and your unconditional love like crazy. So much has changed in 5 years, and your grandbabies are getting so big! I'm sad that they don't get to have you in their lives. Im so grateful for the time we did get!! You were always the BEST cheerleader. I know you'd be so proud of them. I miss you and dad. This song always makes me cry and think of you. It is hard to believe it's been 5 years. ❤️❤️❤️
Today’s feature is our DP, Cinematographer @bradreeb . This dude is SO uber talented, almost don’t want to post him so other people don’t steal him from us, Tear, Tear, Tear. Brad has shot a TON of commercials, and other projects including our last feature The Omicron Killer!
