I acquired Gunner as a free used dog 11 years ago. He was not my pet, not really my dog either, but rather an independent operator who went wherever he felt he was needed most. He believed his highest calling was befriending others. In exchange, all he required was an offering in the form of butter, bacon or treeplanter lunches. Most times, this offering was cleverly pirated.
He had a bohemian youth with countless friends. He was a camp dog, a cook dog, a cache dog, a crag dog, trail dog and often a trip mascot. He had many friends all over the province, from many walks of life. He had a thirst for wild places, disappearing into the bush and appearing when he deemed fit.
Gunner logged impressive mileage with his favorite food lady, who took him for endless adventures in all seasons. He was happy to join anyone on adventure.
Gunner’s gentle and curious soul enriched many lives. While independent, Gunner had deep empathy for his friends and knew how to support people who needed him.
Gunner passed peacefully during a brilliant spring bloom of Arnica. He got to walk in the warm Okanagan sun, take a dip in Okanagan lake before eating a Grandpa Burger and ending a fantastic run of being a dog.
He will be missed.
