Dappled Lighting is a technique used to create highlight and shadow light on your set. It simulates the the natural sunlight coming through trees and gives a flat surface some texture and interest. This approach gives your product a fresh feel because of the added sunlight. It works great for simulating spring or summer shots. The reason glass blocks are chosen for this technique is because they only block some of the light, creating the effect you see in this video. Visit our website to see more!

There are three lighting styles for glassware. Side Light, Back Light and both combined. You can add a white side reflector to add a soft highlight on the glassware. Drop your camera angle to make it a little more dramatic. If you're adding a cold liquid to the glass, wait for the condensation to show. It makes it look cold and helps with the reflections in the glass. If you add carbonated liquid you can always bring back the fizz by adding salt to the liquid. Visit our website to see more!

Direction of Light. This demonstration shows the light falling on the milk and cookies from 360 degrees. Whenever you start to light something, always start with one light. Depending on the subject your main light can come from different directions. But you can only have one main light. One thing to remember is as the main light is moved around to the back it creates more texture and contrast. My personal favourite light position for the main light is 3/4 back. Either from the back left or right, just when you start to get a little flare off your product. Click the link in our bio to see more!

Pretty much anything can act as a reflector, it all comes down to the effect you’re trying to create. In our studio, we most commonly use white cards, black cards, and mirrors each for a different purpose. • White reflectors are great for soft, natural fill. • Mirrors give you a much stronger more direct reflection, perfect when you need to push light into a very specific spot without creating a lot of spill. • Black reflectors do the opposite, helping block light or reduce unwanted reflections to add contrast and depth. Reflectors come in all shapes and sizes, the best way to understand them is to experiment and see what works for your setup. Want to see how we use them in real shoots? Click the link in our bio!
