Peter Lopez had a laugh that could break through doors. He taught me how to live out loud, be snarky and kind in the same breath, and control that breath. If you’ve done musical theatre in South Texas, chances are you know Peter. And if you were lucky enough to work with him, your life and art were changed for the better.
I met Peter in 2000, when he didn’t give up on my singing (but probably should have) in a production of Grease. In 2001 he was the OG South Texas Riff Raff in The Rocky Horror Show, and would own that roll for years to come. I can still hear him singing in my head. No one could out Riff Peter. He would hit notes so high and with such power the scenery would shake. At the time, I was going through a bleached hair glitter emo phase, and he would let me paint blue glitter make-up all over his face for the finale.
He trusted me, he supported me, he was proud of me, and I was just one of countless individuals he lifted up with his coaching and friendship.
My heart is broken and all of my love goes out to his family, his church, to the Harbor Playhouse and the Aurora Arts Theatre. And to all of my friends, who I am missing so much right now.
