Thirty years ago this week, BBC2 quietly dropped a show about five twentysomethings in a south London houseshare. Nobody watched it. Then everybody watched it.
This Life didn’t invent being young and messy in 90s London, but it was the first time British telly admitted that’s what it actually looked like.
The shagging someone you shouldn’t have, the fags, the booze, the pills on a Tuesday.
It landed right in the middle of Cool Britannia and became its most honest document. The temp work, the overdraft, the arguments about whose milk it was.
It made the BFI’s 100 greatest British TV programmes list. The Daily Mail called it the destruction of young minds. Both things are true.
