Was printing off a setlist and the groove caught me off guard. Crazy to think that if the document had had different sentences or spacing between lines, there would have been an entirely different vibe. I liked this particular vibe enough to print off another one and record it for sampling purposes. Here’s a beat I made with it.
In honour of selling this kit soon, here are some drums from the upcoming album! These are all from a few takes so there’s no perfectly aligned video, but yeah stoked to get this album mixed and out there as well as just feeling a bit nostalgic for all the projects that have been worked on using this setup. Dang! Love you guys, see you soon.
Sometimes I think about what the coolest guitar strap length is. When I was 8 years old I saw a video of @switchfoot playing Meant To Live with guitars slung at waist height like a set of long-haired, tommy-gun-wielding Tony Montanas. At that moment, something in my brain chemistry was forever altered. Playing guitar at waist height was the path to radness. But then I turned 15 and started liking math rock and fusion jazz. Those guys played tightly strapped guitar, way up on their chests. They spent hours at home shedding (probably in a seated position) and they needed that same fret precision in a live scenario. These cats were devoted to their craft. They didn’t care what you thought. And isn’t not caring, the essence of coolness? But then I watch some rehearsal videos of myself and the band preparing for a live show on August 15 (this Friday) at Ooey Gooey’s and I realize two things. Number 1: I DO care what you think, and therefore no strap setting can ever be sufficient propel me to post-grunge OR math-rock levels of cool. Number 2: even if it could, somehow I chose to get comfortable playing in that no mans land between chest and waist and I’m stuck there now and wow what was I THINKING. I can only take comfort in the fact that any guitar wielding position is better than the alternative. Wondering what to do with your hands while you sing. See you Friday?
