Maricón is the word I heard most when I was a kid. I was so afraid of hearing it, especially when it was in the same sentence as my name.
Now, thanks to all the maricones who opened the path before me, I’m reclaiming the word and recreating it using a very slow, old-school technique. A technique that wasn’t for me when I was a kid, one that is incredibly powerful, yet underrated because it was seen as “just a grandma’s thing.”
There’s something about the slow process of making this piece, the way of learning it, that connects deeply with the act of resignifying a word full of pain, meaning, but also pride.
