Wetlands across the southern United States depend on species like the cypress. Known scientifically as Taxodium distichium, this tree grows directly in water, its roots anchoring entire ecosystems while adapting to flooding and constant shifts in the landscape.

Agave sisalana in Bale National Park, Ethiopia. This plant is known globally for its fiber, cultivated and used across continents, yet in its natural environment it shows both resilience and adaptability, thriving in challenging conditions.

Photographed in Yellowstone, USA, where thermal ground and mineral deposits create one of the most extreme environments on earth. Botanicum documents how plant life manages to adapt and persist in places shaped by heat, pressure, and constant change.

I'm excited to share that my series Seijaku 静寂 received an Honourable Mention at the International Photography Awards @iphotoawards , one of the world's most recognized competitions in photography.
Shot in Kyoto, the series portrayed garden designers and the hands that sustain them. Each portrait captured a quiet pause, a stillness reflecting the philosophy of the gardens themselves: time, care, humility, and presence.
Grateful to the people who welcomed me into their worlds, and pleased to see this work acknowledged on an international stage. View more via botanicum.world/seijaku

Monstera Deliciosa in Xilitla, San Luis Potosí. This one felt like a window into something quieter. The light came in just enough to separate the layers without flattening them.

Shot in San José del Pacífico, Oaxaca. Kniphofia uvaria with a vignette and strong light on the subject, isolated intentionally. I kept everything out of frame to let the form and texture speak on their own terms. Nothing else felt necessary.

Cordyline Fruticosa, found deep in Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica. Dense heat, low light, and colours that somehow still manage to push through.

Acer Japonicum, photographed in La Forêt de Fontainebleau, France. Light like this doesn’t last long, but the structure of the leaves holds enough interest even without it.

Caught this as the light came through the trees at just the right angle. The way it cut across the branches made the whole place feel different for a few minutes.

From the ongoing Seijaku series, with portraits, interviews, and quiet moments with Kyoto-based gardeners. This is Yamamoto-san at Myokakuji, where he works mostly with moss. Slow work, all about patience. He said moss has its own sense of time, and if you try to rush it, it dies. We walked the paths and he swept as we talked, saying the garden exists with or without you and your job is just to pay attention.

Another from the Seijaku series, an ongoing project documenting garden designers and caretakers. This is Shigemori-san, grandson of the modernist garden designer Mirei Shigemori. We talked about what it means to keep a garden alive, how it changes day to day and you can’t just preserve it the way it was. He said a little disorder shows life, and sometimes you just have to step back and let it do its thing.

Part of an ongoing series from Kyoto called Seijaku, with portraits and conversations with the people who design and care for these gardens. Shot at Kenninji Temple with Kitayama-san, who designed two of the gardens here. He talks about stones like they’re people. They shouldn’t fight each other, they should sit in quiet respect. He even cut down a single red camellia because it threw off the balance. He said gardens should feel more natural than nature, and too much beauty is already a problem.
