Meet Borscht. A project cooked up by @xicada_ and @agardenofmagic — two electronic music producers drawn to raw experimental cutting edge sound. In 2024, we launched Borscht as a platform to support local artists through radio, events, and a record label. Since then, we've hosted shows across Toronto, built a 24/7 stream, and shared music from 20+ emerging voices. This is only the beginning. We grew more familiar with Borscht Radio toward the end of 2024. Before that, the thread led to a curious chat with Dora about whales, animal communication, and listening through echoes: digital, more-than-human, and mythological echoes.   Fast forward to 2025, the Cultural Technologies Lab residency focused on translocal artists' collaboration and an ensuing gathering in Taiwan. Upon returning to Canada, we felt inspired and gained a new outlook on listening, community-building, and on how our local art scene can become more resilient by connecting with global networks.   Leaving an extractive content streaming platform (like the one that starts with an “s“ and ends with a “y”) is just a small step. Creating shared spaces online and offline to test new formats, discover interesting sounds, and develop ways for culture to circulate beyond the platforms we're given makes resistance tangible. Aperçu is a Toronto-based visual artist and musician, known for his chaotic, abstract, and overwhelming live sets. He explores themes such as the overwhelming speed of modern life, and the disorientating whirlpool of capital, technology, media, and news that we navigate on a daily basis. His live sets span many different genres across the electronic music spectrum, from noisy plunderphonic arrangements to cavernous bassy grooves. He has performed with collectives such as Frequencies, Ukai Projects, Best in Town, and Borscht Radio.

Our guest tonight is Luca Capone @caponeluca . In his community radio show The Night Shift, he collects music from all across Canada + great jams from around the world, blending genres of all kinds. What ties it all together is a certain otherworldly feel that we really love. Luca is also the drummer in the punk band Little Window (check them out too—it’s really, really good!). This is a mix of ancient plunderphonics, psychedelic hip-hop transmissions, disturbing soundscape bricolage, and vagabond stoner-rock jams that have lonely wandered around the interweb. In her sonic world, she blends techno, breakbeat, and folk melodies in a stream of spiritual improvisation. Rooted in classical music—from Bach and Mozart to Debussy, Medtner, Stravinsky, and Scriabin—DORRAA is drawn to the grandeur, beauty, and emotional depth of these works. These feelings of wonder, dreaminess, and curiosity about the world remain central as she moves into club culture, which she sees as reflecting the spirit of our time. Inspired by Sun Ra and his spiritual, grooving approach to improvisation, DORRAA spent years as a keyboardist in large ensemble jams, an experience that continues to shape the energy and flow of her live sets. Traditional music and Eastern European folklore also inspire her, and she often incorporates folk songs into her sets, blending strong beats with intricate, artful arrangements. In her live performances, DORRAA creates a kaleidoscopic experience, breaking her tracks into thousands of fragments and reassembling them in unique ways—never the same twice—feeling the room and feeding off its energy. Part of Canada’s experimental underground, Xicada has shared the stage with Dreamcrusher, Pessimist, Spike Hellis, Dis Fig, Black Ox Orkestar, Jessica Moss, and Hesaitix. Her work has been released on Halocline Trance, Foxy Digitalis, Borscht Records, and Aural Tethers. She is co-founder of Borscht, a label and internet radio station, and an active member of Degeneral Strike, a non-profit collective promoting experimental sound and community-based music.
