“It started with an idea that hate is survivable. Indifference to hate is not.” Take a look behind the scenes of Borrowed Spotlight, as told by photographer Bryce Thompson.

This Mother’s Day, we honor the love, resilience, and the enduring strength passed down through generations. These photos are a reminder: from unimaginable loss came families filled with joy, perseverance, and endless love. Slide 1: 93-year old Yetta and her granddaughter, Emily. Slide 2: 103-year old Bella photographed with her daughter, Penny. Slide 3: 90-year old Helga and her son, Howard. Read more about these mothers and their stories at borrowed-spotlight.com

I felt deeply humbled to meet Michael Bornstein. He was just 4 years old when he arrived at Auschwitz, still a child, enduring what no child ever should. Held by the fierce love of his mother, he rebuilt a life, came to America, and has spent his years since bearing witness so the world does not forget. The book, Survivors Club, shares his story in his own words. It stays with you. Along with many other stories. We must remember. Always.

“Dearest Bryce, Only through education from an early age on can we overcome and defeat prejudice and hate in this beautiful world! May G’d bless all the wonderful people I met today!” - Gitta Nagel, born in the Netherlands in 1935.

In honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day, @nbccalive ’s @jessicavilchis sits down with Holocaust survivor Eva Nathanson and @joshpeck to talk about their friendship through @borrowedspotlight , a project pairing survivors with public figures to help keep these stories alive for the next generation. Our full story shares Eva’s experience growing up in Nazi-occupied Hungary and why preserving survivor testimony matters now more than ever. #borrowedspotlight #joshpeck #holocaustremembrance #yomhashoah #holocaustsurvivor

Today is Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Recently I sat with Gitta Nagel, a Holocaust survivor, as part of the @borrowedspotlight project, and I haven’t been the same since. What struck me most isn’t just what she survived, but how she chose to survive. What an honor. Photos: @brycethompson . Thank you @jakedawg79 for including me ❤️

It was everything to meet Elizabeth Bellak, one of the very few remaining survivors of the holocaust. She was the Polish Shirley temple! She found her sister”s diary after the war, published it and it became a NY times best seller called Renia’s Diary. She is resilient and courageous and I will keep every moment we had together with me for the rest of my life. She is kind, funny, brave and all in all miraculous. Spotlighting her testimony and amplifying her story is the honor of a lifetime. @borrowedspotlight @brycethompson #holocaustremembranceday

Today is Yom Hashoah, and we’re honored to have brought Sami Steigmann and Lizzy Caplan together for this special project. Sami Steigmann was born in 1939 in Czernovitz, in what is now Ukraine. Before he was old enough to remember, he was a prisoner in a Nazi labor camp in Transnistria, subjected to medical experimentation - something his body has never forgotten. In 1968, he arrived in the United States with no money and no English, later making New York City his home. We are grateful for Lizzy's warmth and commitment to help amplify Sami's story. Learn more about Sami's story at borrowed-spotlight.com.
