NewBridge members Hannah Kirkham, a clothes maker, and Katie Pollard, an artist working with natural dyes, are running the Grow & Sew session again this Saturday at The NewBridge Project, for anyone who couldn’t make it last Monday. See below for a reminder of what it’s about! ! 🪡
📅 Saturday 9th May | 12.30-2.30pm
📌 The NewBridge Project, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 1AL
What if we had a local hub for plant growing and textiles, run cooperatively by its members? A place to gather for mending, dyeing, foraging and making. A place connected to our environment and guided by the seasons. 🌳
If you are interested in exploring what this could look like (here in Shieldfield), please join them for this free session. to dream up some ideas together. Refreshments including tea and cake will be available. 🌱
This is a retrospective post from our project, Weaving for Wellbeing.
This week was a special week where @borrowedcolour came to give us a wonderful session on natural dying. We got to dye some of the fabric and yarn for the flatweaving and quilting we will be doing later on. Thank you Katie 🙏

Pics from a recent trip to Edinburgh for inspiring chats about natural dyes, bio dyes and the textile circular economy with @sally_buxton_ and to catch @straw_into_gold harvesting flax with @gathermarketgarden at the workers cooperative and city farm @eaclauristonfarm
Such an inspiring day and gave us plenty to think about...

Today we were joined by wonderful @borrowedcolour and @scout_and_rae for the first part of a naturally dyed wax wrap workshop using onion skins, avocado stones, turmeric, tea and black beans! While they were soaking in the dyes we then went foraging for nettles to make twine for the allotment. We ended the morning with our favey bring-a-dish style lunch 💕So excited for the next part of this workshop! 🥑✨

A delayed share of a video that a local Rotterdam press company made of our Eating at the Edges workshop!
They just turned up unannounced..which at the time felt a bit pressured while trying to run the workshop and navigate how other people felt about that too..but most people were happy to be filmed..and it is actually quite nice to have a record of the day!

Sad not to be able to make it to @sewingcafelancaster this weekend for their annual Fashion Revolution Week event’s. Thinking back to last year’s Other Worlds theme - what we saw there is still inspiring us a year later!
We’ve added a new post to our blog that shares our learnings from that brilliant weekend. Link in bio 😊
Pics from last year and scroll for this year’s line-up 🌿 If you’re in or near Lancaster we really recommend going!

We had a great time on Saturday running our workshop 'Eating at the Edges' @paviljoen_aan_het_water
Thanks to everyone that joined and shared, it was an inspiring afternoon. 😊
We shared our thoughts around 'The edge effect' an ecological concept which highlights that there is greater diversity, abundance and exchange at the point where two ecosystems overlap. We considered how this concept applies to a range of scenarios and beings, and how it relates to the wider themes of food, dyes, fibre gardening, storytelling and medicine.
We came together to prepare food, share a meal and exchange ideas and we also had a chance to explore and connect with the plants and garden space here... and of course.. eat cake.🌿🍰
Thanks for hosting us @paviljoen_aan_het_water and thanks again to everyone that came along!

🌿 11:00 - 14:00 🌿
Hello! We are Katie Pollard, an artist and natural dyer and Hannah Kirkham, a garment-maker and also For Solidarity project manager @thenewbridgeproject . We are currently in residence at Paviljeon aan het Water until Saturday 30 March.
We are hosting a workshop this Saturday called Eating at the Edges where we will prepare a collective plant-based lunch inspired by the Edge Effect – the idea that where ecosystems overlap is where we find greater diversity. Swipe for more information and let us know if you’d like to join us.
Together we are exploring approaches to regenerative textile production that puts people and the planet at the centre.
During the residency, we want to connect with people working in, or enthusiastic about, regenerative textiles, community gardens, food projects and alternative education projects. We also want to see models of working that offer alternatives to the dominant capitalist system. Please get in touch and say hi!
A lovely bundle dyeing workshop I ran at #tynemouthpriory at the end of July. Thanks to Harriet Sutcliffe and Rosie Morris for inviting me to run this as part of their project @figures_that_sway and thanks both also for the workshop support and the great photos!
We had a walk around the site and gathered a small amount of plant material to use in our bundles alongside some saved dye plants, we also had a play with some natural inks.
Thanks to all that attended - it was a super fun day 🏵💮🌻🌼🌿

During our recent visit to London we were lucky enough to meet with incredibly knowledgeable, talented and generous people, and chat to them about their work.
For our first visit we popped in to see Debbie Mitchener at her natural dye studio @c_n_d_s in Bow, East London. We chatted about her journey with CNDS, the joys and challenges of running the business and what's on the horizon.
Next we visited Stephanie Steele in Finsbury Park @castle_climbing_garden . Stephanie works in the permaculture garden, growing food for the cafe as well as fibre and dye plants. She is also in the process of establishing her own regenerative textile studio @stephaniesteele.studio . She gave us a tour of the gardens and we chatted about her work there, permaculture processes, and the crossovers between food, dyes and fibre.
For our final visit we went to see Susan and Ashley @naturesrainbowhitchin where we spent a very enjoyable afternoon learning about extracting indigo from woad leaves and dyeing fabric in an indigo vat.
We also squeezed in a visit to see Magdalena Abakanowicz' large scale 3d woven sculptures at the Tate Modern as well as Zena Holloways' exhibition 'rooted' where we saw sculptures the artist had created using seagrass roots guided into beeswax moulds and dyed with plant dyes. @root.full
So inspiring and lots to process! There’ll be more on the blog about these visits in the not-too-distant future....
