Our brilliant Borders Volunteers have been busy making benches this week! 💚
The benches have been made from ash that has been felled and processed, and finished with beautiful boards milled by the fantastic @realwoodstudios ! 🌿
They are a wonderful addition to our community woodland area, which will be increasingly used for upcoming outreach activities for vulnerable and marginalised groups. 🌳

Our Head of Land Management, Nicola Hunt, is celebrating 25 years at BFT! 🌳
Nic joined the Trust team in 2001 as the Projects Assistant and has worked in just about every role in BFT over the years. Now she is responsible for the development and management of habitat restoration and engagement activities in our Wild Heart sites and on other BFT landholdings. 🌿
Originally from Hamilton, Nic moved to Edinburgh to study Ecological Science at the University. From there, she worked in a number of jobs including as a ranger in West Lothian, before moving to the Borders in 2000 to a mammal research position.
During her time at BFT, Nic has overseen and facilitated the planting of over one and a half million trees, and has secured millions of pounds in funding for the restoration of nature in the South of Scotland. What an incredible ongoing legacy, from our longest-serving member of staff! 🌳

It's been a busy time recently for our Borders Volunteers! We recently had a fabulous FIT count training session with Kate from @buglife_ict , to help volunteers effectively monitor insects on sites. The session took place at BFT site The Secret Meadow at Drygrange, and it was a day of learning and laughter!
Earlier in April, we set to clearing gorse at the Deer Park in Selkirk with our friends at @bgnscotland , to help manage encroachment onto species rich grassland. And this week we have been clearing felled dead ash from Drygrange, with the help of @borders_college chainsaw trainees.

Join Hermione for an evening Ethnobotany Walk exploring the relationship between native trees, wild plants and people! 💚
Tuesday, July 7 • 6:30pm - 8pm 🍃
For thousands of years, people have built deep relationships with the plants growing around them. These plants have been sources of food and medicine, provided dyes for clothing, and supplied the raw materials needed for tools, shelter, and daily life. 🌿
On this ethnobotany walk, we’ll slow down and reconnect with that ancient knowledge. We’ll identify some of the wild plants growing in our local area, learn how they were traditionally used, and explore the ways they can still support us today. Whether you’re curious about herbal remedies, wild foods, natural dyes, or simply want to see the land with new eyes, this walk offers a chance to rediscover the wisdom rooted in the plants beneath our feet. 🍃
We will meet on the grass beside The Haining/Haining Loch. Parking is available at The Haining. Paths are wheelchair and pushchair accessible.
This event is a collaboration between Borders Forest Trust and @bgnscotland as part of the Selkirk Nature Network event series, and in celebration of 30 years of landscape recovery in the south of Scotland. 💚

We still have spaces on our Talla & Gameshope Planting High Camp on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd May! 🌱🌱🌱
On the Saturday we will set up camp and then head off uphill for a day of planting, returning to the camp for Saturday evening. We will have a further day of planting on the Sunday.
You will need to be self-sufficient for camping equipment (tent, sleeping bag, etc), and food for the weekend. Please note that transport is not provided for this volunteer event.
We have a compost toilet at the camp site, and the wood burning stove will be on in the barn on Saturday evening.
If you are unable to spend the full weekend with us, then there is an option to join us just for the planting on Sunday.
