Depending on your zone, it may be time to plant out your dahlia tubers you sprouted indoors. If you're waiting for temperatures to warm a bit more, start by hardening them off in a high or low tunnel. Cover them with row cover at night to prevent cold damage. Let them spend about a week outside, acclimating to the weather conditions.
When planting dahlias out:
-Pick a spot with full sun for peak performance
-Make sure the soil is rich in compost and well-draining
-Depending on the variety, space them 1-3 feet apart in a hole about 6 inches deep. Place the sprout facing upward and fill the hole with native soil. Gently tamp down and lightly water.
Many varieties will require staking as they grow. Be sure to label them well so you can stay organized when you dig them up in the fall.

2026 has brought some "weird" weather. Most of the country experienced an early heat wave, we've seen lots of volatile storms, and many of us started the season with drought-like conditions. That said, we're also nearing the last frost date for most growing zones!
If you have a high tunnel, it's safe to plant out warm-weather crops like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant (just keep the frost blankets nearby). Those outside beds are likely filling up with brassicas, lettuce, and onions. And don't forget about the flowers to add beauty and keep our pollinators happy.

Have you ever broadforked a whole garden in one day? Not only is it a great workout (when done properly to prevent injury), but it also doesn't disturb the soil's structure, helps to break up compaction, and prevents weed seeds from surfacing.
Broadforking is also:
Quiet
Sustainable
A great alternative to roto-tilling
This simple, durable tool will last for decades with proper care. Aerate your soil the no-till way with our USA-made broadfork. Comment FORKPOWER for a link to shop.

🐞 Build a bug hotel with the kids 🌿
This easy backyard project supports local pollinators and is a fun and easy way to teach kids about the garden ecosystem. Bug hotels provide shelter and nesting areas for solitary or passing-through insects.
Grab some sticks, pinecones, bamboo, and other natural materials of various shapes and sizes. Shove them all into a cozy shelter and hang it in a safe, dry spot. Turn on the "open for business" sign and watch the bugs move in!
Would your kids build one? 👇

Compost = "black gold"
The process of composting turns kitchen and garden scraps into a nutrient-dense powerhouse that can transform a garden from mediocre to high-performing. Here are some of our favorite ways to boost garden fertility, promote biodiversity, and grow healthier gardens:
-Reduce erosion
-Enhance soil structure
-Increase drainability
-Soil test and keep organic matter high
-Cover crop between seasons and when fields are fallow
-Grow native plants with various sizes and lengths of roots
What are some things you do in your garden to promote soil fertility?
