‘Shifting the Narrative’ Artefact — Lay-Flat Hardcover Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen Accessibility Edition by final year MA Publishing Student Emma Vukman / @emmavukman . “This artefact supports a dissertation that explores a narrative on neurodiversity which aims to question the limited scope on accessibility in today’s publishing industry. Rather than accepting the insufficient options currently offered, such as e-readers, condescending physical editions, or audiobooks, this study challenges the industry to focus on accommodating and embracing individuality through the variety of choice. This artefact demonstrates how the industry might incorporate subtle changes to existing and well-loved formats without demanding the individual to turn to digital alternatives, and with this, be excluded from the original reading experience. The industry is encouraged to cease the one-size-fits-all mentality and consider how a variety of options might act as a more appropriate reflection of the true meaning of ‘inclusivity’.” / #hardcover #blinddeboss #layflatbinding

‘Towards the Sea, Around the Marshes’ — Six-Metre-Long Hardcover Concertina by final year MA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Student Holly Gupta / @hollygupta . “This six-metre-long concertina book explores walking as a therapeutic practice: a way to connect with nature, feel present and escape the pressure to be productive. Lumen prints, made by placing natural objects on photographic paper, record small interventions created on walks as an expression of the activity’s joyful immediacy. These are combined with photographs and text offering glimpses of the external and internal landscapes passed through. Together, they show how moving through nature has the potential to psychologically transform the walker, at a moment when cultivating a closer relationship with the land is more important than ever before.” / #concertina #hardcover #accordionbook #leporello

‘Illusions of Self’ — Hardcover Photobook by MA Photography student Crispin Day. “The photobook, Illusions of Self, draws together images of the rooms and possessions of my mother’s home after her death, their gradual deterioration and disappearance. It is a meditation on the ways in which our presence becomes embedded in everyday spaces and objects and minds and leaves traces of the seen, unseen and hidden.” / #hardcover #photobook #photography

‘Whereabouts’ — Perfect Bound Softcover by MA Publishing student Victoria Martins / @vixtoriamartins . Cover title and spine printed in Letterpress and finished with thermology. Photographs by MA Commercial Photography Student Emily White / @emilywhte . “‘Whereabouts’ is a book by Jhumpa Lahiri which explores the non-linear life story of an unnamed woman in an unnamed Italian city. This project reimagines Lahiri’s story as a black-and-white art book, focusing solely on typographic layouts and experimental design. The cover and spine mimic the narrator’s anonymity, with the title and chapter names intentionally subtle. The book is held in a white slipcase with the same title printed in the centre in white thermology.“ / #softcover #perfectbinding #letterpress

‘to weather the storm’ — Coptic Bound Softcover by MA Photography student Georgios Chatzakis / @georgios_chatzakis . »Immersing myself in these landscapes I find myself again, like I belong there. I reflect, write, meditate, photograph, feel, smell, sense...« “Chatzakis explores walking in the British and Irish landscapes as a process for healing trauma. Alienated by places of comfort, these barren landscapes possess his body and guide him to rediscover himself. Through making the work, Georgios discovered an interest in how different narratives reveal themselves through various media such as a large-scale installation or a book. The fragmented photographs represent a parallel between the weathering rocks and an inner storm, where edges have no limit and the neutral and uncharacterized become authentic through ambiguous interpretation. The work has taken measures to minimise its impact on the environment.” / #copticbinding #softcover #exposedspine
