Here are 5 things we’d do again if we got another puppy:
1. Desensitize to different sounds and feelings: as soon as we brought him home, we gradually introduced Bonito to loud household items like drills, hair dryers, and vacuums to build confidence and reduce stress as he grew up.
2. Crate train: to support wth reducing anxiety, potty training, house training, and car transportation.
3. Hand feed to build connection: we fed every meal and treat by hand in Bonito’s first year.
4. Enforce doorway manners: we love a polite pup! This built impulse control and prevents him from bolting into new areas.
5. Install an in-home camera: for monitoring safety and behaviours from a distance.

One common misconception about puppy socialization is that it only involves meeting many dogs and being greeted by many people, but in fact we learned that it’s a much broader process involving the introduction to many sounds 🧨, people 👨🏻, animals 🐟, and environments 🌲!
One key skill we worked on this year was remaining neutral no matter where we were or what/who we saw. Bonito learned that he did not have to say hi or react to everyone he came across and it has truly made our lives easier on and off leash, at home, and in public areas. As you may know, it can be very challenging for a puppy, especially an Aussie to stay calm in new and exciting environments, but with lots and lots of practice, we have seen lots of improvement! We are really proud of how far Bonito has come and excited to share his progress with you!

It all started in the first month of bringing Bonito home. Crate training, recall, heeling, “sit”, swimming, and much more! 🙌🏼

As we’re experiencing warmer weather here in Vancouver, we’re excited to be exploring new areas of the Lower Mainland and practicing our dog training skills out in the sun☀️

1️⃣ Impulse control: whether it’s being distracted by other dogs, the smell of bbq, or big crowds, we are working on making good choices without command.
2️⃣ Obedience: following our commands in all situations.
3️⃣ Heeling past distractions: being able to calmly move through crowds and stay with us is helpful for his safety.
