A series of works on paper are currently on display in the viewing room as part of the exhibition ‘In the Space Before Speech’. Amy Steel’s works explore transformation, renewal, and the search for new ways of being. Drawing inspiration from historical and literary women who forged new pathways, the series reflects on the female body as a site of knowledge and possibility. Created through layered applications of black ink and charcoal that are repeatedly washed and wiped away, the images gradually reveal figures and landscapes emerging from darkness. This process foregrounds the moment of illumination - an emergence into light and collective presence. Amy Steel Ink flashe, pencil, charcoal on 300 gsm paper 21 x 29.7cm. Secret Sentinels by Clare Burnett is a striking family of outdoor sculptures made from found objects and discarded materials. Inspired by the balance between privacy and convenience in the age of surveillance, these shimmering forms subtly echo the cameras that surround us — in city security systems, doorbells, phones and computers. Each sculpture is made entirely by the artist, from welded internal structures and CAD calculations to attaching over 25,000 tiles by hand. Clare Burnett Secret Sentinels, 2023 Glass tiles, found and repurposed materials, cementitious mixes, steel I 210 x 75 x 75cm 110 cm II 230 x 115 x 115 cm III 210 x 72 x 72 cm Displayed in the gallery garden until the end of August. #clareburnett #mosaicsculptures #boleegallery #secretsentinels

In the painting ‘His Face is SO Maliable’ Saville reflects on discovering the blog ‘Kemp Folds’, where users uploaded images of actor Ross Kemp’s face folded in different ways. What interests her is how repetition and distortion destabilise his image, slipping between recognition and absurdity. At times, the face begins to resemble a cubist or surrealist construction, broken into competing angles and expressions. This sits in contrast to his public persona, defined by a tough English masculinity. He became widely known for playing Grant Mitchell in EastEnders — a volatile, physically assertive, emotionally repressed “hard man.” The folded images interrupt that fixed identity, reducing it to something awkward, comic, and unexpectedly fragile. She is drawn to how quickly cultural images can unravel under even simple acts of manipulation. A series of new studies by Kim Booker are on display in the viewing room, and included in the exhibition ‘In the Space Before Speech’ alongside works by Clare Morgan and Amy Steel. ‘Spring’ is a series of small paintings on linen, created as intimate studies for a larger forthcoming body of work. In these pieces, a group of women emerges through gesture, posture, and subtle shifts in presence. Their scale invites closeness; their looseness leaves room for interpretation. Whether seen as companionship or self-reflection, the figures lean toward one another with quiet solidarity, hinting at cycles of renewal, resilience, and shared strength that give the series its title. Boo Saville: GENTLE opened to the public this Saturday. Thank you to everyone that joined us to celebrate and to meet Boo. In GENTLE, Moments of tenderness, grief, care and isolation sit uneasily alongside ideals of control, performance, and self-mastery. Rather than offering resolution, the paintings hold these tensions in place, asking how masculinity is shaped by community, expectation, and the pressures of visibility. The exhibition continues until 13 May. Open Wednesday - Saturday, 10am - 5pm. Photo: Dave Watts #boosaville #gentle #exhibitionbruton #boleegallery

How to Enter the Art World…. Wednesday 20 May, 7-9pm Join artists Polly Morgan, Boo Saville and Nicola Turner in discussion with writer Hettie Judah as they share personal journeys into the art world—paths shaped not by convention, but by detours, reinvention, and resilience. The conversation celebrates Judah’s new book, How to Enter the Art World… AFTER a Late Start, a First Career, Illness, Raising Children, a Crisis of Confidence, Leaving It in Disgust, which explores how creative careers often begin after unexpected turning points. Together, the panel will reflect on late starts, career changes, moments of doubt, and the courage it takes to begin again. Expect an honest and inspiring evening for anyone curious about creative life, second acts, and the many ways an artistic path can unfold. Tickets via link in bio. #hettiejudah #howtoentertheartworld #gallerypanel

Join us this Saturday, for a drop-in brunch from 10am - 1pm to preview three exhibitions opening simultaneously across the gallery. These exhibitions bring together painting, drawing and sculpture in a shared exploration of vulnerability, visibility and what it means to be seen. In the Main Gallery, ‘Boo Saville: GENTLE’ presents paintings of men and boys that sit between strength and fragility, inviting us to consider what is hidden, suppressed, or denied within contemporary male identity. Upstairs in the Viewing Room, ‘In the Space Before Speech: Kim Booker, Claire Morgan & Amy Steel’ brings together three artists using drawing and painting to explore vulnerability as a shared human experience through intimate mark-making and expressive gesture. In the Garden, Clare Burnett: Secret Sentinels features a family of glass mosaic sculptures Inspired by the balance between privacy and convenience in the age of surveillance.
