Durable, divisible, transportable 💼 and, in 19th century Tibet, 80 of them would’ve bought a horse 🐎. Later you could have boiled it up and drank it☕.

The inventor of the carbon microphone🎤💡, David Hughes, was born #OTD in 1831. One is featured in this incongruous vignette appearing on our 1935 and 1937 $50 notes.
Despite the classical appearance, it represents modern communication 🌐📡. The globe 🌎 behind our classical announcer implies international wireless communication.
By 1935, the carbon microphone was already old tech⏳, but its use in broadcasting was cutting-edge 📻🚀. Unlike today’s mics 🎙️, the carbon version had a power supply ⚡ that boosted output, making it a favorite for long-distance broadcasters 🌍📡.

The Canadian Bank of Commerce opened its doors #OTD in 1867 🏦. As it grew, it absorbed many smaller banks and ultimately joined forces with the Imperial Bank of Canada in 1960. Now they are CIBC.
How the CIBC came about is a bit confusing. The Imperial was the fifth largest bank in Canada and had bought the Canadian division of Barclay’s Bank, a British Institution, in 1956. But then Barclay’s London head office began buying up Imperial stock in 1960. Fearing a hostile takeover, Imperial approached the Bank of Commerce about merging🤯. The presidents of the two banks secretly met at the home of Neil J. McKinnon, head of the Commerce. It is said the decision to merge took place in less than ten minutes⏱️.

Motherhood is rarely depicted on bank notes.💖
This Hungarian note carries an image of “Mother with Child," a sculpture by the respected Hungarian sculptor Ferenc Medgyessy.
The sculpture was created in 1917 and is only around 40 cm tall. Not only is it uncommon to feature a mother image on a bank note, but the woman is also breast feeding her child—even more surprising.
Medgyessy was both a physician🩺 and a sculptor, serving as a surgeon on the Eastern Front during the First World War.

Alex Colville, who designed our 1967 Confederation centennial coin series, chose the Canada goose for the silver dollar. He considered it “particularly Canadian,” epitomizing both the natural beauty of the country and the powerful, travelling natures of birds.
Colville didn’t want to choose animals that were just representative of Canada 🍁 but for the values and virtues that each animal itself possessed. The Canada goose carried, for him, a “serene, dynamic quality.” #WorldMigratoryBirdsDay #SaturdayArtifact

This coin is from Newfoundland’s last issue of 1947. Though it is a 5¢ piece, it is not a “nickel” as we know it.
It’s a tiny silver coin—so small that it’s even smaller than our dime. Newfoundlanders called them “fish scales.”🐟✨
When Canadian silver 5¢ pieces became nickel coins in 1922, they grew larger than the dime. For one thing, 5 cents worth of nickel is more material than the same value of silver.
Though our coins are no longer made of nickel and silver, they still retain sizes that don’t all fit the logical scale of size versus value. This retains our currency’s familiarity.🧐💡 #FridayFunFact
