I missed Hal Sirowitz’s birthday last week (March 6). He would have been 77. This picture from 1977 evokes our long friendship. That’s Hal, leaning far right. That’s Naaz Hosseini dancing poetry, left, and that’s me in the center reading Susan Share’s scroll of my poem, “Dining and Dancing at the Hotel Orpheon.” This was a #cetaartistsproject production, the largest federally-funded artists’ project since the WPA. Come back, CETA! Come back, Hal!
I’m heading West to see my family (all my children moved to California, what did I do wrong?) but before I go, wanted to let you know the tix are now available for LIFE POEM, solo show with Mivos Quartet, April 28-29. Hope to see you there! Tix: https://shorturl.at/JA03g
I was walking in the Bronx one day, about a year ago or so, Grand Concourse, thinking of Miguel Algarín, whose sister lives right around here, and so many great parties, like the one where Zake threw the ashtray at Miguel, when I looked over and —there was Irma! Miguelito’s sister conjured up! The night Miguel demanded that Bimbo and I do a poetry duel duet! Judge John Howard was there, only he wasn’t a judge yet, being 10 years old, Miguel and Irma’s nephew, now Chair of the Board of the Nuyorican Poets Café, which will reopen Halloween ‘26 but don’t tell anyone I told you.
Elizabeth Murray at MoMA Atrium opens today! The 6 paintings form a delicious timeline of her “shattered shapes,” starting with the iconic “Painters Progress” (1981) and ending with “Do the Dance” (2005) when the shapes still bop but now are flat. This is part of the Agnes Gund Celebration — Aggie and Elizabeth were often roomammates on European jaunts. Many stories!
Panic*DJ, the Plain White Wrapper, was my stage persona in the 80s, accompanied by My Main Motor Scooter, songwriting buddy, musician Vito Ricci. We toured the country with hits like “Love Lake” and “I’d Rather Be Crazy Than Stupid (So How Come I’m Crazy for You?).” Check out our album THE AWESOME WHATEVER on all platforms 🎼
