Starlight is the first song I wrote when we moved to CA over 12 years ago. We had just left behind our favorite city ever, Portland OR, where Lindsey and I started our life together and where we had an amazing community of family and friends. I was feeling pretty vulnerable and lonely as well as second guessing a lot of things… I remember these words one day just literally falling out of me in a single moment.
Fast forward to a couple years later and it was released on a live record with a lot of big guitars and synths and drums. I’ll always be so grateful for the way God used it, but I often wonder if I was maybe supposed to keep it to myself, at least for a little while longer, like a simple prayer or journal entry. Either way, it will always hold a special place in my heart and I’ll always hear it in my head quiet and stripped back like this.
This song has been stuck in my head/heart ever since writing it with my brothers @nickbays and @bendfuller .
We were actually together that day just to finish up Ben’s song ‘Deeper Still’ - but right before we were gonna head home, Nick showed us this chorus idea he had and we freaked out and then wrote the rest of the song in like 30 minutes.
I’ll never get over the way songs can start as a piece of someone’s personal story but then become an absolute lifeline for countless others. What started as a prayer for Nick on a dark lonely midnight road to Chicago has become an anthem for me and my family through some of the hardest seasons of our lives. Just very grateful to have been a small part of this beautiful song. I don’t know when it will be released into the world but when it does I have a feeling it will resonate and become a prayer for a lot of other people just like myself. This song is called Wilderness.
