46 years ago today at Parris Island, SC, my father and I. He didn’t recognize me at first. I offered to help him find his son among all the other hairless Marines….he accepted the offer.
I ran into bagpiper Iain Massie today at an Army Veteran funeral. Iain was a Pipe Major in the British Army and a member of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. There is no better around.
This may have been the most influential album to me as a very young, brand new, trumpet player. Recorded in 1972, it is unlike any other Mangione album and it’s never been released digitally. (It can be found on YouTube). Small, low budget, quartet setting with some fantastic jazz. After this it became more commercial but he brought his form of jazz into people’s homes when jazz was dying. He definitely deserves acclaim for that.
