March 23, 1986 - 40 years ago today, I competed in the Pro class for the first time. Earlier that year during my 2nd semester of college, my mom overheard a phone conversation I was having with
@bob_haro . I’d just turned down the opportunity to do 6 weeks of demos in San Diego because, well, I was in college. Being only a few weeks into the new semester, she suggested I consider withdrawing from school and continuing my education in the fall. I withdrew and flew to San Diego, but the demo rehearsal revealed that they were borderline silly, so I turned them down again.
@shorelineshots and his family were nice enough to offer me a place to stay at their home in Solana Beach for the spring, complete with a vert ramp built against a cliff in the backyard and a nearby Roberto’s Taco Shop. Hell yes, I replied. Round 1 of the AFA Masters Series was held in SoCal during my stay and the decision was made to turn Pro. I ended up taking the Overall win after placing 2nd to RL in Flatland and 4th in Ramp behind Dominguez, Fiola and Wilkerson - all good dudes whose riding I’d admired for years. When the fall semester arrived, I was too busy riding #bmx to re-enroll, a decision my mom fully supported 🤙🏼
