I’ve never been someone who enjoyed history, mostly because American history never felt like my history, but recently I’ve been pulled, spiritually so, to learning more about ancient Egypt and Africa via the materials I’m using in my personal work. Felt very kismet to have spent my morning reading up on Cleopatra and the Ptolemaic dynasty only to enter the gallery and find artifacts from that exact period!
Lauren Halsey’s brilliant re-imagining of her community as Egyptian gods and goddesses is so poignant it feels almost unreal.

I’ve been silently crafting a body of work over the last 3 years that has a very special place in my heart. Which is why I haven’t shared much about it, because I’m sensitive bout my ish!
I proposed the work in my application for this past round of the Guggenheim Fellowship, which I didn’t get, but in the process of applying I received a different gift? My mentor, dance mama, and friend wrote me a letter of recommendation that shifted the way I perceive myself. To hear her words about my work, having known me since I was 17 and witnessing some of the most pivotal moments in my early adulthood changed something in me.
Grateful to have people in my life who can speak to things about myself that sometimes I can’t even see. I try not to give credence to much external validation, but this one is different for me. And I’d be lying if I said I don’t get a bit teary eyed reading it.
That little push we all need sometimes y’know 🖤
If I were ever to become an influencer, it would be for food. I would absolutely influence food.
