We have been made aware of concerning reports regarding sexual harassment at Manchester medical school. These incidents are appalling and have no place in medical school or education.
Please find above an open letter which sets out our position, key expectations from the medical school, and our message to students directly.
Yesterday in Parliament, MPs raised serious concerns about how new doctors are allocated their first jobs.
They highlighted how the current system contributes to new doctors feeling undervalued and unsupported, and we’d agree.
Here’s Dr Peter Prinsley MP referencing our proposals for changing foundation recruitment for the better.
The government has committed to a review, but can’t confirm a timeline. Whatever happens, reform must mean real, meaningful consultation with medical students every step of the way.
“We welcome the Government’s announcement today on its commitment to widening participation in medicine and strengthening the NHS as a driver of social mobility. Expanding access programmes is a positive step, but clear eligibility criteria are essential to ensure support reaches those who need it most.
Incentivising progress from medical schools is encouraging, but must include clear measures and strong financial, academic and pastoral support so disadvantaged students aren’t left behind.
However, inadequate funding, reduced student finance in later years and unmanageable debt remain major barriers, which is why the BMA is calling for universal student loan forgiveness.
Meaningful progress depends not just on improving access, but on ensuring students are fully supported to succeed every step of the way.”
Roheel Ahmar & Ohemaa Asare - MSC Deputy Co-chairs, Widening Participation
The Treasury Committee is reviewing whether the student loan system is fair and wants to hear from doctors and medical students. But you only have a short window to tell them what it’s actually like.
Doctors are often hit harder by student loans due to longer training and delayed earnings.
When responding to the survey, you may want to mention...
• the cost of longer medical training
• interest and repayments early in your career
• the combined impact of loans and tax
• how debt affects morale, retention and progression
The survey closes Tuesday 14 April. Have your say. Click the link in bio.
