Designing on Forgotten Walls Pt.2
I found this blank wall behind Northgate Super Market in La Mirada CA and wondered how I could help improve it? Just for fun I took a photo of made a mock up in photoshop
I went with very minimal adjustment. You don’t want to bring too much attention to the back of buildings. So I went with a very minimal Light grey N7 for the top section and Light warm grey N6 for the bottom section.
Visited The Village of Putuidem a cultural site in San Juan Capistrano and learned about the Acjachemen Nation.
The huts (kiichas) are some shaped, made of flexible branches bent into place and held together with plant fiber ties. Nothing rigid everything works through tension and balance.
Nerby were large stones with worn in bowls from grinding acorns and seeds. Not carved all at once, but shaped slowly over time through repetition.
Even the plants around the site - agave, sage, nopales the source of food and medicines.
What I connected with was how they looked at direction, specifically the west. Payoomk- the sun returns to the ocean. Not an ending, but a release. A moment where light fades, but doesn’t disappear.. it just becomes something new.

Colors: I went with Burnt Sienna for the sky and a Raw Umber for the mountains which gives a nice contrast to the greenery. This combination gives the feeling of rich soil 🪴
Design: The darker layer on the bottom will do better with age and help hide dirt that might accumulate over the years.
