βMarketβ is a colourful range of Australian food items. Each piece in this ongoing project is hand-made in plush and paper, incorporating almost 100 objects (and counting) of a variety of foods available in our country. βMarketβ celebrates Australiaβs culinary diversity and draws inspiration from the artistβs upbringing β including local foodstuffs with origins deriving from Cantonese cuisine.
Something as mundane and commonplace as the food we eat carries immense cultural value. Unfortunately, itβs also one of the very things that marks you as an Other β especially if youβre already in the minority.
In pursuit of acceptance, many people come to be ashamed of their history and culture from a young age. With time, one comes to appreciate the importance and power of what was once seemingly everyday and inconsequential.
βMarketβ is a visual reminder that there are many ways to be Australian and there are also many ways to belong.
