Strategic thinking in matches is just as important as technique
Here is an example of strategic thinking in an Sjjf match
Both players wanted the bottom position but ended up in double pull. In Sjjf if you double pull and up for 3 seconds this is 2 points however you are now not in the position you want to be playing within the first moments of the match starting. If you now self sweep yourself your opponent will score 2 points making the score even.
Because the rule of Sjjf is if at the end of the match the score is even you go to sudden death this effectively resets the score to 00 but you are in the bottom position which is what you wanted from the beginning and you can choose the moment in the match when to make your decisive attack.
In New Zealand especially going to overtime does not benefit guard pullers

As a competitor it’s important to train and understand the 4 major openings to a match
Not only should you have a plan for each of them but you must understand the down stream consequences of your plan otherwise you can never compete at the strategic level

Coach @blindgrappler showed once again what leadership and commitment to the team looks like. No matter the circumstances, he made sure he was there to support every athlete who stepped onto the mats 👊

Grateful to my coaches for their guidance, patience, and constant support. To my training partners who push me, test me, and sharpen me every session — thank you. And to everyone who’s backed me along the way, I appreciate it more than you know. Blue belt just the beginning, 🤙🏾 Osss
Judo Black belt Vs Bjj black belt at the Daredevil in house comp.
Hamish is preparing for an international Sambo competition and and wants to grapple as much as he can. It was my pleasure to roll this young man to give him mat time.
The first match I pulled as I did not want to get throwing on my head lol. The second match I did stand up with him and won on points.
It’s always fun to test yourself against other styles.
Good luck for your upcoming competition Hamish I’m sure you’re going to do very well 🙌

I ended up in a super fight with this young athlete from @bjj.onthemat at our inhouse comp today.
Ivy is deaf and has been enjoying Jiu Jitsu with Pedro and his team.
Pedro is working on signs for competition as Ivy is going to be a scary competitor she’s already tapped her first black belt 🙌

🔥 PGC NZ – NO GI • SUB ONLY • COMBAT JIU-JITSU 🔥
What a day for the team.
Huge congratulations to Jhanelle and Gustavo — both stepping up, both taking on older opponents, and both walking away with wins in their super fights 🏆
That takes courage. That takes heart. That’s Daredevil.
Jhanelle accepted her match with less than 24 hours notice and still showed up ready. Respect.
A massive thank you to their opponents for the tough matches 🤝
And to PGC for continuing to run events that truly give back to the athletes 🙌
We also came away with 2nd place Best Academy — proud is an understatement.
The future is bright for these two, and for our team as a whole.
We’re just getting started. 💪🔥
