OPS045: VARIOUS ARTISTS “It Came From The Abyss” (Volume 2) LP/Digital
/
“It Came from the Abyss” (Volume 2) continues the sonic journey into the depths of the underground’s lush sonic spectrum.
This edition kicks off with the debut of a heavy skate rock studio project called COFFINDROP, featuring members of Metallica, Torche, Converge, Bleach Everything, and Pianos Become the Teeth. 100% of COFFINDROP’s royalties are donated to The Skatepark Project. Vocalist Kyle Durfey then bleeds over into another one of his projects called BURIAL WAVES with their song “Light Heads.”
The only other vocalist featured on side A is Eric Richter, who appears first with his newest project SUBURBAN EYES on the track “SoCal (Psycho),” immediately followed by his work 30 years prior via the CHRISTIE FRONT DRIVE track “Now I Do” (originally from the long out of print Sineater/Christie Front Drive split 7”).
Side A wraps with some instrumental bliss, beginning with a previously-unreleased bit of brilliance from THIS WILL DESTROY YOU called “Shapeless Burst” and wrapping with the beautifully haunting “Duty” by HARMONIC CROSS, on vinyl format for the first time ever.
Side B starts with the open road anthem “Dusted” from INTRCPTR (Ben Carr of 5ive, Larry Herweg of Pelican), also appearing for the first time ever on vinyl. This is chased by BLEACH EVERYTHING “Bound” and a criminally underrated band/song from the early 00’s Boston heavy scene in the form of DISAPPEARER “A Skull Full of Bats.”
The program closes out with a 1-2-3-4 punch to the face from bands in the short, fast, and loud pedigree, kicking off with CORN ON MACABRE’s grinding horror anthem “You’re Okay, I’m Undead” straight into GEHENNA’s negative hardcore-laced “Parallel Hells,” and finally capped by a pair of 90’s fringe legends in the form of APARTMENT 213 with “Mutilation” and BLACK ARMY JACKET closing the show with “Pathogen.”
As with Volume 1, Matt Stikker returns once again with this edition’s incredible cover illustration.
Thanks for supporting and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

To mark the arrival of Halloween 2023 in proper fashion, @bleacheverything invokes "All Alone in Dirt," an EP of new material created under the invigorating spirit(s) of the season.
A series of tactical strikes spanning only 4:33 total duration across 4 songs, "All Alone in Dirt" still manages to cover a ton of sonic territory within that same blink of an eye. Bookended with the raging, explosive cookers "Canopic Jars" and "The Happiness," the program also takes listeners into deeper, darker waters with the scream-less and ultimately haunting "Truth at the Dead Ends" and a guitar seance titled "Praetorian."
Formed 12 years ago in Richmond, Virginia, Bleach Everything has always been the same four members - near lifelong friends and collaborators from bands as varied as Mammoth Grinder, Highness, Corn on Macabre, Iron Reagan, City of Caterpillar, Suppression, Forensics, US Christmas, Jesuit, Count Me Out, and dozens more.
Now 30 songs into the fray, there is still no shortage of new material chambered and ready to release at a moment's notice. But for now: enjoy the dirt.
Happy Halloween.

As with "The Happiness" (the first preview track), it's far more interesting to me to live alongside thousands of different listeners' "meanings" to the song now and in the future versus explicitly laying it out on a Thursday in October of 2023. (Hell, I'm sure it will change many times over in my own brain with time.)
Of note, this is the first completely cleanly-sung song we've done as a band and it's probably the first time I've done that in all 26 years of recording my own voice. While not intentional in that regard, knowing that it would be part of a "Halloween release," I absolutely wanted to tap into the spirit of many of the voices I've enjoyed in older spooky movies, TV episodes, and the vast amount of Halloween sound-effects and narration LP's I've habitually picked up as the years have gone by. Think old, episodic Scooby-Doo specters, Vincent Price's mere existence, Arch Oboler's "Drop Dead! An Exercise in Horror!" LP, and even some of Lux Interior's reverbed-out voiceovers and vocal treatments. I wanted it all to "loom" over the music, have a slightly haunting quality, a warble here and there, and overall conjure even an iota of the atmosphere that all of the "spooky" recorded works I've ever admired have been successful in.
Thanks as always to the people who listen to our band whenever we release stuff. "All Alone in Dirt" (the EP) hits on Halloween.

Lyrics for “The Happiness,” which we released last Friday as a preview to the upcoming “All Alone in Dirt” EP.
Hardcore singers have the specific habit of needing to overtly state what every song is “about,” especially when performing. So while that controlling (?) tendency is trying to twitch like a phantom limb, I’m happier ultimately realizing that it’s better, and more interesting, for thousands of different narratives to exist in the minds of the people who have already played/purchased/shared the song and those who will. It’s like like getting to live alongside the song in a bunch of parallel universes that somehow still exist in yours, maaaan.
Anyway, “Truth at the Dead Ends” (our next preview track) releases in one week (10/25). “All Alone in Dirt” 7” picture flexi/digital EP releases on Halloween.
Thanks to everyone who’s been jamming the track. The Linktree in this and the band’s profile will take you directly to your preferred digital spot for it.
