Those Who Stay Will Be Champions…
Teaching @umichmusicaltheatre this semester was a trippy, heavenly bit of time travel. Every single moment in these rooms and halls was an eleven-outta-ten for me. I’m going to spend the next few weeks thinking, writing, and gabbing about the absolute adventure this semester turned out to be…but for now, know that I am bursting with admiration and Delta Skymiles. I’ve rarely been more proud — of the students, of the department, of the daily discoveries we found together. Classrooms were so full of learning and laughter, and whatever the magic matter is that makes up The Michigan Difference.
Special shout to @sallyeidman , @sydmo7 and @cynthkw for making it possible under almost impossible circumstances. I am nothing without the love, friendship, and support of brilliant women who are nice to me. They showed up for me so I could show up for the students.
Lastly: MT ‘28, you will forever be my Sophomores, even when you’re out there winning awards and running the world. You are Special-Special. Period, as you all like to say. Not me. I am almost 40. Go Blue, forever. 💛 💙
Summer film accidentally double exposed itself. How? I don’t know. Sometimes simple things are hard. The real ones will call it new art (💅) because IYKYK. And honestly…can you even believe it? For the rest: I think it’s nice when worlds collide and viewpoints blur — we have to look a little closer, and I like that.

Oh, @achorusline50 … thank you for these sweet memories. This show (and the few blessed productions I’ve been a part of) taught me about craft, mastery, legacy, and love. Here’s a 23 year old me in the 2010 tour crooning about Lola. During our Chelsea Studios rehearsals, @baayork told me, “Michael would have loved you.” Wildly generous and kind words, no doubt they simultaneously broke my heart and boosted my ego, and at the heart of them…the whole ACL ethos. I was a hungry heart, desperate to break in. I would have done anything to be onstage. Anything to practice towards perfection, and maybe even perform? And maybe even get paid?! Man, I needed this job. And I needed those words! I could act my ass off and (sometimes) do a triple, but singing freaked me out and often left me feeling like my fancy BFA wasn’t gonna cut it. And then Baayork casually dropped a little legacy in my lap, and I’ve basically never looked back. What a gift. THE gift. The same one that now, at 38 with a few dreams deferred and a few dreams known, I understand was always mine to borrow.
Huge congratulations to everyone involved in @saccoandvanzettiaredeadplay . It’s a miracle if an idea makes its way from a pen to a page. If that idea goes from page to cast to workshop to rehearsal to ten sold out shows in midtown? That’s as good as it ever gets. These folks deserve a wide run with a huge budget, and if one day it wins all the awards and all the applause and is an epic star maker…I bet they’ll still think of this world premiere run as the best of times. It’s always that way: Good words, good actors, dark room, big swings, magic made. Loved. 10/10.
And! If I may…extremely proud of @suburbansurferdad who produced and hustled for this one. Little bro at the stage door? Peak proud.
Lastly: peek the Minolta box in the prop closet. That’s Langlitz Lore right there. A crusty little god wink that we’re all in the right place.
