Educating yourself on antiracism and white privilege or even bringing awareness to the racial injustices our country is currently facing is a great first step in creating change, but it can’t stop there. You might even be asking yourself after reading a book or posting an Instagram story, “now what?”
One of the major ways we can support the black community especially black women-owned businesses beyond social media is with our spending power. The disparity between white-owned and black-owned businesses proves that the economy hasn’t been in favor of black-run businesses. Although over 50% of women-owned businesses are women of color, they only brought in 422 billion dollars in revenue vs white women-owned businesses who brought in 1.4 trillion dollars in revenue. The State Of Women-Owned Businesses Report also stated that four million new jobs and $981 billion in revenue would be added if the average revenue of minority women-owned firms matched that of white women-owned businesses. Additionally, it was found that Black women-owned businesses earned an average revenue of $24,000 per firm vs. $142,900 among all women-owned businesses. The gap between black women-owned businesses’ average revenue and all women-owned businesses is the greatest of any minority.

There once was a time when Black American men and women had to break through racial barriers to pursue careers as certified public accountants. Theresa Hammond, a professor of accounting at the College of Business at San Francisco State University, documented the stories of those paved the way for Black Americans to become a CPA in her book, "A White-Collar Profession: African American Certified Public Accountants since 1921."At the time Hammond published the book, in 2002, it was reported that less than 1 percent of CPAs were black. What you'll find in 'A White-Collar Profession' are interviews with approximately 100 groundbreaking black CPAs who shared the challenges they had to face to work in the profession. Here are 11 of those trailblazing CPAs who paved the way for black CPAs. .

Rujeko’s curatorial work includes 2 museum shows about protest, one of which focused specifically on change led by Black women. We asked her to help us curate imagery from the ongoing global protests for Black life. She was drawn to Morgan’s words, of course, and the way in which she framed the text. This week, Instagram is honoring Juneteenth, which commemorates the liberation of the last enslaved African Americans on June 19, 1865. But this is just the beginning.
