Every part of our logo tells a story. The Adinkra symbols are a visual language rooted in West African heritage. The lines and pathways represent movement, direction, and new futures. They represent what Black planning truly is—a journey toward beauty, equity, and belonging in our spaces. 🎨 SYMPOSIUM THEME 3: ART, CULTURE & MEMORY Black Cultural Preservation & Expression Black cultural expression has always been central to how communities affirm identity, build belonging, and resist erasure. Across Canada, Black artists, designers, and community builders are reimagining urban spaces that honour memory, celebrate creativity, and reflect Black life — from cultural centres and community anchors to public art and shared spaces. This session explores the power of Black aesthetics as both cultural preservation and spatial justice. Panelists will reflect on how architecture, storytelling, and art shape places that feel rooted, restorative, and expressive of Black worldviews. Together, we’ll examine: ✨ How art, culture, and design come together in Black placekeeping ✨ The role of memory and storytelling in shaping space ✨ Aspirational visions for Black cultural hubs ✨ The practical pathways — policy, partnerships, and funding — needed to bring them to life This is an invitation to imagine what it means to build beautiful Black worlds — where preservation meets creation, and every space tells a story of endurance, joy, and belonging. 🏘️ SYMPOSIUM THEME 2: BLACK LEADERSHIP IN AFFORDABLE HOUSING Delivering Housing, Building Belonging Across Canada, Black communities continue to face systemic barriers to safe, affordable, and secure housing — shaped by long histories of displacement, land-based injustice, and exclusion from housing opportunities. Often working with limited resources, these organizations are building housing through vision, creativity, and collective care. Panellists will share how they are: ✨ Strengthening internal capacity ✨ Navigating complex development and financing systems ✨ Securing land and forging meaningful partnerships ✨ Centring Black aesthetics, community values, and resident voices This conversation is about more than housing delivery — it’s about flourishing in place, building power, and creating homes where Black communities can thrive. 🌍 SYMPOSIUM THEME 1: COMMUNITY-LED BLACK PLANNING Building Thriving Black Communities Urban and land-use planning in Canada has long been shaped by anti-Black racism and settler colonialism, resulting in displacement, dispossession, and ongoing inequities for Black communities. At the same time, Black communities across the country are leading their own planning futures. This session centres community-led Black planning as a pathway toward equity, self-determination, and spatial justice. Community partners will share how they are advancing grassroots planning, policy advocacy, and community land stewardship to reshape planning practice and centre Black voices and lived experience. This is about protecting place, building collective power, and creating thriving, sustainable Black communities.
