Getting ready to be the only Black face my Black patients will see after a life altering traumatic event. As a Black Trauma NP.
Because Black nurses are somehow the only group expected to show up to work with no makeup and our hair not done.
Like looking good and being excellent are mutually exclusive.
Like our appearance is the problem and not the systems that have always tried to make us smaller.
I show up with my lashes done and my edges laid and my Fabletics scrubs on and I am still the most qualified to be in that room.
Higher Black representation in the provider workforce is directly linked to better outcomes and reduced mortality for Black patients.
We are not just showing up for ourselves.
We are showing up for every Black patient who deserves to see someone who looks like them walk through that door.
Specialties were not built for us.
If you are Black and you are considering healthcare: we need you in the room.
Not just in primary care. In trauma. In surgery. In the ICU. In every specialty they told you was not yours.
