If you are in the Boston area next Thursday, March 19, please join us at MIT at 1 pm in room 6-120 for a talk by THE Harry Allen, aka The Media Assassin, titled BEHOLD! The Wings of Hip-Hop Spaceflight, about his Hip-Hop Deep Space Monument (HHDSM) project.
The HHDSM project will create a time capsule of 50-100 of hip-hop’s most transcendent recordings—its masterworks. The list will be put together by artists, experts, and fans.
Allen describes the tally as “the records with which — if we held on to them as the world was destroyed — we might be able to start the culture over again.”
Once assembled, encoded, and ensconced, the goal is to send the records on an extrasolar trajectory across space.
In his talk, Allen will discuss how he got interested in this type of cultural work and what it means to us in our current moment.
We are happy to be a part of the David McGee exhibition opening this Saturday, March 14, at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Uptown Charlotte. This career retrospective of McGee’s work is open through August 23.
Black Notes Project is honored to have been asked to create a companion soundtrack.
This listening companion from Black Notes Project explores the deep connection between Black visual art and music, framing sound as a parallel archive of history, memory, and cultural knowledge. Through curated musical pairings, it places David McGee’s paintings in dialogue with Black musical traditions rooted in improvisation, layering, and collective meaning-making. Rather than illustrating the artwork, the music expands it—inviting audiences to experience Black art as an intellectual, spiritual, and cultural system shaped by survival and imagination.
