Black History Month in Germany 🇩🇪✊🏾
Why do we celebrate it here?
From Germany’s suppressed colonial past to the realities of anti-Black racism today, Black history is deeply intertwined with German history, even when it’s been excluded from textbooks, museums, and public memory.
Since 1990, Black communities and organizations have used Black History Month to reclaim space: honoring Black resistance, achievements, and contributions in Germany and across the African diaspora.
While Germany has recognized BHM for 36 years, its roots trace back 100 years to Chicago in 1926. Since then communities, organizations and governmental initiatives have worked to make progress.
So what does progress actually look like for Black communities in Germany today?

Berlin Anti-Discrimination Act protecting people from discrimination by public authorities since 2020
Independent Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner since 2022
National Action Plan Against Racism since 2017 + investment of over 1 billion euros from 2021-2024 to combat hate speech & extremism
