OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is facing a federal lawsuit after the AI chatbot allegedly provided advice to a gunman involved in the April 2025 mass shooting at Florida State University, which left two people dead and six injured.
The widow of one of the victims, Vandana Joshi, recently filed the suit in Florida, claiming that ChatGPT played a direct role in enabling the attack by advising the accused shooter, Phoenix Ikner, on how, where, and when to carry out the crime.
According to the complaint, Ikner, then a student at FSU, had “extensive conversations” with ChatGPT, sharing images of firearms and seeking guidance on how to use them. The lawsuit alleges that the chatbot recommended the type of gun and ammunition, explained features of the weapons, and even suggested the best time of day to find the most people at the student union.
Ikner reportedly followed these instructions, beginning his attack at lunchtime in line with ChatGPT’s alleged advice on peak campus hours. The suit claims the chatbot also discussed with Ikner the possible legal consequences and media attention that could result from such an act.
Joshi’s attorneys argue that OpenAI failed to detect the threat, stating ChatGPT “either defectively failed to connect the dots or else was never properly designed to recognize the threat."
The complaint further alleges that ChatGPT “flattered” and “encouraged” Ikner’s delusions and did not intervene when he raised questions about suicide, terrorism, and mass shootings.
OpenAI has denied responsibility, with spokesperson Drew Pusateri saying, “Last year’s mass shooting at Florida State University was a tragedy, but ChatGPT is not responsible for this terrible crime.”

A university student in Virginia recently walked across the graduation stage despite an accident taking away his ability to walk.
In 2024, Virginia Union University (VUU) student Jaiden Picot was struck by a truck while riding his e-scooter to work.
Despite this, he continued to pursue his education and work towards his MBA through a combination of hospitalizations, rehabilitation, and faith.
“I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me,” he said. “I had a goal before my accident that I wanted to do this... I didn't let my accident stop me, so I worked hard, prayed, had faith, and I made it here.”
He finally earned his Executive MBA, marking his second graduation at VUU after earning his bachelor's degree last year.
Picot was able to walk using a robotic exoskeleton suit, which he explains helps him lift his body "like a big transformer suit.” He called out both his mother and his girlfriend for supporting him through his recovery and academics, and told WTVR that his philosophy of being "one percent better every day” sustained him through the journey.
Picot reportedly plans to take a short break before pursuing a career in real estate with Keller Williams, the largest real estate franchise in the United States. He aims to help people with disabilities find accessible housing.

President Donald Trump is poised to drop several lawsuits against the federal government in exchange for the creation of a $1.7 billion fund to compensate individuals who claim they were targeted by the Biden administration.
Trump is expected to drop several lawsuits against the federal government — including a $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) — in exchange for establishing the commission.
The proposed five-person commission would oversee the distribution of roughly $1.7 billion in taxpayer funds to people who claim they were harmed by the Biden administration’s alleged "weaponization" of the legal system, including nearly 1,600 people charged in connection with the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
Trump commuted the sentences of 14 individuals charged in the attack on January 20.
“They were patriots as far as I was concerned," Trump said last year in an interview with Newsmax.
Sources familiar with the discussions told ABC News that the compensation fund is likely the main condition for Trump dropping several legal claims against the federal government.
These include a $10 billion lawsuit stemming from the 2019 leak of his tax returns and $230 million in legal claims arising from the 2022 search of his Mar-a-Lago estate.
The proposed fund would have limited oversight and could allow commission members to privately distribute taxpayer money, with Trump retaining the authority to remove them without cause.
“This administration is dripping with corruption from top to bottom, but rushing a settlement to steal $1.7 billion taxpayer dollars for a slush fund before a judge can toss your junk lawsuit would be among the most corrupt acts in American political history,” Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) told HuffPost in an interview on Friday.

Texas GOP Rep. Wesley Hunt claimed that efforts by Southern states to eliminate majority-Black districts following the Supreme Court’s historic ruling do not represent a new era of Jim Crow.
During a recent House Judiciary Committee hearing, Hunt denounced claims by Democrats that redrawing congressional districts to limit Black voting power constituted racism.
“I’m seeing a lot of talk from my colleagues on the left as we shift toward this reinvigorated talk about Jim Crow and the path to this country. And as someone who is a direct descendant of a slave... I can assure you, slavery is over,” Hunt said.
“Jim Crow is dead. When I go anywhere, I don’t see any ‘White Only’ signs... I am a Black man that is representing a white-majority district in Texas,” Hunt added.
Following a Supreme Court ruling last month striking down a majority-Black district in Louisiana and weakening Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, several Southern states are proposing new congressional maps that critics say would weaken Black voting power and favor Republicans politically.
Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) described the ruling as “Jim Crow 2.0” during a May 2 interview with CNN’s Victor Blackwell, warning that the proposed maps in several states would eliminate several majority-Black districts.
Most recently, the U.S. Supreme Court voted on Monday (May 11) to lift an injunction requiring Alabama to keep its current congressional map — which includes two majority-Black districts — until the 2030 census, allowing the legislature to pass a new map that reduces that number to one district

Elon Musk once again weighed in on the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey.
Musk recently replied to a post by conservative political commentator
Matt Walsh, criticizing Nyong’o’s casting.
“Not one person on the planet actually thinks that Lupita Nyong’o is ‘the most beautiful woman in the world.’ But Christopher Nolan knows that he would be called racist if he gave the role of ‘the most beautiful woman’ to a white woman,” Walsh wrote in a post on X. “Nolan is technically talented but a coward...”
Musk replied: “True.”
Walsh revisited the topic the next day, arguing that a white actress, such as Sydney Sweeney, would have been better suited for the role.
“We’re told that we shouldn’t object to Helen of Troy being portrayed as a black woman. And yet if a major Hollywood studio made a film set in Africa and cast a white woman as ‘the most beautiful woman in Africa,’ those same people would literally riot in the street,” Walsh wrote. “If, say, Sydney Sweeney was cast in the role, they’d be driven to murderous violence. We all know this is the case.”
Musk once again chimed in in the comments, claiming Nolan’s casting choice reflected “such hypocrisy in Hollywood.”
Musk first responded to rumors surrounding Nyong’o’s casting in January, replying to a post on X criticizing the decision by writing that “Chris Nolan has lost his integrity.”
The comment came in response to a post complaining that Helen of Troy was historically described as “fair-skinned” and blonde — and that casting a Black actress would be an “insult” to Homer’s epic.

Louisiana officials have agreed to pay a $4.8 million settlement to the family of Ronald Greene, a motorist killed during a 2019 traffic stop.
The settlement would end the wrongful death lawsuit filed by the victim’s daughter, Tayla Greene, in 2021.
Tayla filed the suit after the Associated Press obtained bodycam footage showing Louisiana State Police officers violently arresting her father, Ronald Greene, during a traffic stop in 2019. The troopers had reportedly initially pulled Greene over for an unspecified traffic violation.
“I can confirm that we reached an agreement to resolve outstanding claims in civil litigation against the State arising from the incident involving Ronald Greene,” Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said in a statement.
The 46-minute clip shows the troopers repeatedly stunning, punching, and even dragging Greene across the ground after putting him in handcuffs. One trooper, identified as Chris Hollingsworth, jolted Greene before he could get out of his car and yanked him to the ground, despite him not resisting and pleading that he was “sorry” for leading the cops on a chase.
Another can be seen dragging him by the leg shackles and holding him prone on the roadside while stepping on his back and pressing his bloodied face into the asphalt.
Greene was reportedly left in that prone position by officers, impeding his breathing for at least nine minutes. The officers failed to render medical aid, and he died on the way to the hospital.
Hollingsworth, who was also seen repeatedly bashing Greene in the head with a flashlight, was later recorded by his boy cam saying: “I beat the ever-living f— out of him.” Hollingsworth reportedly died in a high-speed, single-vehicle crash in 2020 after being told he would be fired over Greene’s death.
Louisiana officials reportedly rebuffed repeated calls to release footage, with troopers initially telling Greene’s family that he died after crashing into a tree during a high-speed chase.
