BLACK IN BERLIN /Yero Adugna Eticha

»Black in Thüringen« – Fotografie-Ausstellung von Yero Adugna Eticha in der Universitätsbibliothek Ab Do, 4. Juni 2026, zeigt der Fotograf Yero Adugna Eticha in der Universitätsbibliothek der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar seine Ausstellung »Black in Thüringen«. Die rund 20 Schwarz-Weiß-Porträts stellen Schwarze Menschen vor, die in Thüringen leben, studieren oder arbeiten. Mit seinen Bildern eröffnet der Künstler neue Perspektiven auf Sichtbarkeit, Zugehörigkeit und gesellschaftliche Teilhabe. Das Fotoprojekt »Black in Thüringen« knüpft an Adugna Etichas frühere Arbeiten »Black in Berlin« und »Black in Dortmund« an. Es beleuchtet die Lebensrealitäten und Perspektiven Afro-/Schwarzer Deutscher in Thüringen. Die Porträts, aufgenommen im Studio, verbinden persönliche Geschichten mit Aspekten der Thüringer Erinnerungskultur. Ziel des Projekts ist es, Schwarze Lebenswelten als selbstverständlichen Teil der Gesellschaft sichtbar zu machen und Raum für Empowerment und Dialog zu schaffen.  Im Wintersemester 2025/26 lehrte Yero Adugna Eticha an der Fakultät Kunst und Gestaltung der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Gemeinsam mit Prof. Dr. Birgit Wudtke leitete er das Projektmodul »EVERYDAY ELSEWHERE«, das Street Photography als Medium interkulturellen Austauschs erforschte. Dabei arbeiteten Studierende aus Weimar mit Fotograf*innen aus Addis Ababa zusammen und entwickelten gemeinsame Werke. Bereits im Oktober 2025 präsentierte Adugna Eticha seine Publikation »Black in Berlin« im Rahmen einer Bauhaus Masters Lecture.  Die Ausstellung »Black in Thüringen« entstand im Kontext der Winterwerkschau und wird durch ein Begleitprogramm zur Vernissage ergänzt. Nach einer Einführung von Prof. Dr. Birgit Wudtke diskutiert Yero Adugna Eticha mit der Aktivistin und Sozialarbeiterin Josina Monteiro sowie weiteren Gästen über Sichtbarkeit, Repräsentation und Schwarzes Leben in Thüringen. What does it mean to be Black in Germany today?⁠ ⁠ For over fifteen years, photographer Yero Adugna Eticha has investigated this question through his lens. “Black in Berlin”, on view from 16 September as part of our Emerging Berlin talent program, challenges stereotypes, fosters intimacy, and illuminates diasporic identity through striking portraiture.⁠ ⁠ Born in Oromia, Ethiopia, and working between Berlin and Addis Ababa, Eticha began by photographing friends. In 2020, following the Black Lives Matter movement, Eticha invited Berliners to his studio. Over 590 people stepped in front of his camera, sharing their stories, dreams, and presence. Around 40 of the resulting 500 portraits are now part of the exhibition.⁠ ⁠ “These pictures celebrate Black joy and resilience; they hold both pain and pride. In his studio, over 500 people shared more than just their portraits. They shared moments of laughter, tears, and vulnerability. “I dream of a Berlin that celebrates the facet of every Black face.” – Yero Adugna Eticha At @hfs_ernst_busch @yero_adugna_eticha will present excerpts from his unique collection “Black in Berlin 2020–2024”. Following the Black Lives Matter movement Adugna Eticha started distributing leaflets to Black people, asking them to let him take their picture. Over the years, more than 500 portraits of Afro-Black Germans and the African diaspora in Berlin were made. Featuring more than 590 black-and-white studio portraits, the series—described by Eticha as a “portrait cosmos”—centers Berlin’s Black communities on their own terms. Rather than focusing solely on struggle, the work foregrounds presence, pride, joy, and self-definition, offering a living archive of diasporic identity in Germany. Everyday Elsewhere — Intercultural Photography Exchange Tikur Qelem magazine , in collaboration with Bauhaus-Universität @bauhaus_uni Weimar,presented a collective exhibition in Weimar, Germany featuring the work of 9 Ethiopian photographers 9 photographers from Germany exploring everyday life through smartphone photography Titled Everyday Elsewhere,” @_everydayelsewhere the project reflects how daily realities can be seen differently across cultures. Through images created in Addis Ababa and beyond, the exhibition opens a visual dialogue about place, distance, belonging, and contemporary urban experience. This intercultural initiative was led by Birgit Wudtke, @postdigitale_fotokunst , @bauhaus.fotografie Yero Adugna Eticha and Ethiopian photographer Yonathan Terefe benti connecting photography, education, and cultural exchange between Ethiopia and Germany.
