at the start of the year, for the first time in a long time, i set a goal on what i wanted to do creatively and personally. after quite literally googling, “are there Black people in Alaska”, the goal became simple: go to Alaska and make as many memories as i can. fast forward 8 months and i’m in Anchorage, Alaska through the end of the month walking my dog, riding my bike, catching up on reading and sleep, and most importantly making tintype portraits to be added to the Black Magic archive. starting tomorrow and ending on the 27th of August, i’ll be posted up at @akelaspace to photograph the Black and Afro-Indigenous communities of Alaska. free of charge. this place is easily the most stunning place i’ve ever seen and that says a lot coming from a prideful New Yorker. i am beyond excited to document the beautiful people living here. if you live in Anchorage or the surrounding towns or know someone eligible to come by, don’t hesitate to share the link in my bio. slots are available to book via the link in my bio. another day closer to history… and to seeing another moose.

When Otis McCormick was given orders from the military to move to Alaska in 1954, he was far from excited. If you met him today, you’d be hard-pressed to envision a time he wasn’t excited about anything. Meet Otis, the subject of our latest Black in Alaska profile, link in bio. #blackinalaska
