At the 2026 London Marathon, Sabastian Sawe made history as the first person ever to officially run a marathon under two hours, while the race itself secured its place in history as the first to see two athletes go sub-two. It’s the kind of story Hollywood makes films about, the kind that has people naming their children Sawe, and the type of achievement you’d expect Adidas to craft a compelling campaign around.
This moment presented something incredibly valuable: a story that writes itself. You can imagine a billboard featuring Sawe, his history-defining time beneath him, and a bold line above: “The Time is Nawe!”. But that’s not quite how it played out.

At the 98th Academy Awards, Sinners by Ryan Coogler made history. With 16 nominations, the most ever for a single film, it took home four Oscars: Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Cinematography and Best Original Score. Michael B. Jordan became only the sixth black actor to win Best Actor in a Leading Role, while Autumn Durald Arkapaw became the first woman and woman of colour to win Best Cinematography.
Behind the camera, milestones for black cinema continued. Coogler won his first Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, becoming only the second black writer to do so after Jordan Peele.
The night celebrated achievement long overdue and serves as a reminder of how far there is still to go.
