Some things I’ve learned from doing photoshoots:
1. There are no real rules.
Every creative I admire works differently. Lean into what actually inspires you.
2. Art imitates life.
Have a plan, but don’t be afraid to go off-script if the moment calls for it.
3. Music changes the vibe.
I’m comfortable working in silence, but a little background music helps people relax in front of the camera.
4. Have fun with it.
I used to stay overly “professional.” Now I focus more on connection and conversation.
5. Show, don’t just tell.
Demonstration a pose is often clearer than an explanation. The goal is confidence, not confusion.
6. Patience matters.
If something doesn’t click right away, find a different way to explain it.

Most people think the shoot is all about what happens on camera.
I used to think that too.
It’s not.
It’s a process, starting with how the space feels, how the lighting sets the mood and the planning that happens before anyone steps in front of the lens.
Even a simple mooboard can communicate the visual tone of the shoot better than words ever could.
It’s just as important to listen and build around the people in the room.
Wanna wear jeans instead of dressing up? Cool, let’s roll with it.
Especially for couples or anyone not used to being photographed, comfort is what leads to natural images you can’t fake.
