Our free Festival is possible through the generous support of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (@nyculture ). Our biggest thanks to the amazing staff and Commissioner Diya Vij, who are truly tireless in their support of cultural organizations. Save the dates and come to NYC's largest free literary celebration this September 20th-28th with more than 400 authors over 9 days.

2025 marked our 20th Anniversary of presenting free literary events for book lovers in Brooklyn and beyond. Guided by our founding credo of "hip, smart, and diverse", this year was such a joy to organize and present over all nine days. We had great weather, wonderfu programmingl partners and vendors, and a lovely crowd of readers at all of our events. As this year comes to a close, we can't wait to see you in 2026!

We have exciting news to share! The Brooklyn Book Festival is one of 60 organizations across New York State to be recognized with a NYSCA Reserve Fund Grant from @nyscouncilonthearts (NYSCA) and @nyfacurrent (NYFA). This grant is an important part of building a strong, sustainable future for the Brooklyn Book Festival. Now, our goal is to further grow that fund. If an unpredictable challenge comes our way (remember the hurricane winds in 2022?), a reserve gives us the means to recover from unexpected losses and continue to bring free, accessible, and inspiring literary programs to all five boroughs of NYC and beyond!

After an update about the launch of the book and recent appearances, listen to It’s Puzzling: The Power of Crosswords and Games. Hosted by Natan Last, author of the cultural history of crosswords, Across the Universe, this discussion from the Brooklyn Book Festival featured me with Juliana Pache, the creator of Black Crossword. The conversation delves into the cultural significance of games and puzzles and how they reflect history and community. While I share insight from my book, Juliana discusses the creation of Black Crossword and how it connects the African diaspora through daily mini puzzles. We explore themes such as the joy of solving cryptic crosswords, the social dynamics of community-based puzzles, and the personal impacts of puzzling on their own lives. The episode also introduces listeners to the intricacies of cryptic crosswords and how Sondheim popularized them in America (the focus of an upcoming episode).

Make sure to get the book everywhere books are found, or click the link in my bio.

What an incredible #BKBF2025 we had!  It couldn't have happened without our partners, who, year after year, welcome us into their spaces to bring you both the 50+ panels and the Literary Marketplace. From historic Brooklyn Borough Hall (@bkbpreynoso ), the @brooklynlawschool , and the Center for @brooklynhistory to the gorgeous backdrop of @stannsbrooklyn and our outdoors spaces with @nycparks , this is our home in Brooklyn that makes the festival possible each year.
