The day you returned home, I can still hear the joy in the family’s voices when I called them. It was like a replenishment for Mum’s sadness after losing Kidus (Mack). She was so happy I could feel her soul beating full of life.
Both of our sisters, Genet and Azeb, your best friends, spoke of you like you were their lifeline their light through dark times and of the strength you gave them, the strength you gave all of us.
Your big brothers, Yohanes and Tesgey, poured drinks and slaughtered a bull to celebrate you. And for me… you were like a father the father we lost. You were the first person I called when my son was born, the first person I called when life fell apart and I needed guidance. You were the one brother I missed so deeply.
Because of you, I got into music. I would sit and wait for you to come home from school when we were kids. You taught me how to dance when I was five. You gave me my first drink as a teenager even though Pops was mad about it. You were the voice of God when things got rough living abroad.
You were funny, caring, strong, soft, brave, intelligent, cunning, and full of spirit. Your funeral felt like a concert a gathering of all the lives you touched.
God, we miss you. Rest in power, my brother. We’ll see you again.

Lately I’ve been staring into the abyss, thinking about all the chances I let slip in the last 5 years while sacrificing myself for family and a future that can vanish in a heartbeat. We spend so much time chasing the life we’re taught to want that we forget to look after the person living it. We bend ourselves trying to make others happy, searching for purpose, and somewhere along the way… we forget to love ourselves.
Sometimes you have to look back to move forward.
Paper Plain is a tune written at Studio 13, Oven Street, in Brunstopia where community was everything, art was life, and love was the language spoken.

It was a pleasure to offer my skills, knowledge, and professionalism to help bring the Ethiopian 2018 New Year Festival to life pro bono. Spanning two weekends from a vibrant street festival on Nicholson Street, Footscray, to a formal dinner gala at Kensington Town Hall this experience was more than just an event. It was a chance to reconnect with my roots 🇪🇹, demonstrate the power of planning ahead and working together can create something truly impactful. Seeing the pride and joy on my team’s faces was the most rewarding part of it all. Next year will be even bigger and better!
